When will Mike Trout be back?

Update: Trout was eligible to come off the Injured List on July 17, but the Angels star is still not yet ready to return. Trout took swings in late July and ran the bases. The multi-time MVP will have a brief rehab assignment in the minors before re-joining the big club. A late August or early September return to MLB is most likely. The Angels are hopeful for Trout to be back this season despite the timeline for his return being pushed back and LA not factoring in to the American League’s playoff picture.

Trout had not yet starting jogging, as of the week of June 7. Prior to the Angels’ game against the Kansas City Royals on June 7, Trout offered an update on his status.

“Today was probably my best day yet, just tolerance-wise,” he said, via NBCSports.com. “As far as activities, I’m doing as much as I can to strengthen around the calf muscle.

“I’m happy with my progress so far. It has been good the last couple of days,” he continued. “I should have a better idea on a return date once I start moving around, as in jogging or running.”

Despite the Angels overall struggles this season, there have been signs of hope lately. LAA has gone 6-2 so far in the month of June and is just one lengthy win streak away from being right in the wild card mix in the American League. The Angels surely won’t rush Trout back, but it’s not a situation where they would just put him on the shelf for the rest of the year due to a porous record. Expect Trout to play again this season.

There is not a concrete answer to when will Mike Trout be back but the original timetable for his return was 6-8 weeks from May 18. Here are the dates that line up with that timetable:

  • Tuesday, June 29: Angels at Yankees (6 weeks)
  • Tuesday, July 6: Red Sox at Angels (7 weeks)
  • Tuesday, July 13: MLB All-Star break (8 weeks)

It makes a ton of sense that the Angels would wait until after the All-Star break to bring Trout back into the fold. So, the most likely date we could see Trout back on the field for the Angels would be Friday, July 16 when LA will take on the Mariners at home to begin the second half of their season.

Mike Trout MVP odds

Trout is always in the mix for AL MVP, and he was at the top of baseball MVP odds boards prior to his injury. Trout was the favorite and was +175 to win the American League’s most coveted individual award on May 18 at DraftKings Sportsbook, but is now +2500. That still gives him the fourth lowest odds, but the sizable chunk of time he’s missing will surely hurt him once voting time comes around.

Trout’s teammate, Shohei Ohtani, was the AL favorite at DraftKings Sportsbook as of June 11 as the dual-threat had +130 odds. Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr had the second lowest odds at +230 and Boston’s Xander Bogaerts was +2000.

Trout is perfectly capable of going on a tear once he returns, but it would likely take his best extended stretch ever for him to match season-ending numbers with the players currently joining him atop the board. If the Angels were to start getting hot upon Trout’s return and make a legit playoff push, that narrative could also give him a giant boost with voters.

Angels odds

The Angels were a long shot to win the World Series on June 11 as they were +7500 at DraftKings. Sixteen MLB teams had shorter odds.

As for the AL West, they were +1100 to win the division with the Astros at -140 and the Athletics at +135.
LAA was +475 to make the playoffs at DK.
