Michigan sports betting start date

The day that sports bettors in the Great Lakes State have been waiting for is so close, they can taste it. The online Michigan sports betting launch date is set for this Friday, Jan. 22.

On Tuesday morning, the Michigan Gaming Control Board confirmed its first batch of licensees will start accepting wagers online on Friday. For Michiganders keen to get in on the action at first crack, that means it’s time to do a couple of things.

Details on the Michigan sports betting launch date

For most of the past year, the only way to legally bet on sporting events in Michigan has been to visit a brick-and-mortar sportsbook at either a commercial or tribal casino somewhere in the state. Those have been open irregularly, however. Additionally, traveling to a casino may not be the most convenient or safest activity during the pandemic.

That won’t be necessary to place legal wagers in Michigan later this week. At noon ET that day, MI bettors can browse markets on sportsbooks’ apps/websites and get their wagers in completely online.

MGCB Executive director Richard Kalm shared his thoughts on the long-awaited announcement Tuesday:

“The Michigan Gaming Control Board and the state’s commercial and tribal casinos will begin a new era Jan. 22 with the launch of regulated online gaming and sports betting,” said Kalm. “Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos. Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.”

Last month, the MGCB gave provisional licenses to 15 sportsbooks. Nine of those will be part of launch day. It’s uncertain when the other six, like FOX Bet and PointsBet, will be ready to go.

The menu of sportsbook options includes some of the most popular books in the country:

While Michiganders are undoubtedly looking to the sports calendar to see what events are on tap for Friday, there are two actions they can take now to prepare for the first day of legal online betting in their state. Time is actually running out on the first of the two.

Get ready for launch day and score some “free money,” too

Several licensees have been offering registration promotions in MI in anticipation of this day. That includes BetMGM, BetRivers, and DraftKings.

Those deals expire when the sportsbooks go fully live in MI, so time is of the essence. You can register for free completely online in just a few minutes and you can do so from anywhere.

The other thing to do is to watch the Internet and your email for special launch-day promotions exclusively for use in Michigan. You may be able to “stack” those offers with early registration deals, depending on sportsbooks’ house rules.

Friday is going to be a great day for sports bettors in Michigan. The gambling industry in the Great Lakes State will never be the same.
