Michael Thomas Injury Update: When Will The Saints WR Return?

Posted By Matt Burke on September 21, 2021

The New Orleans Saints have endured some tumultuous months in 2021. Franchise quarterback Drew Brees retired earlier in the year and then the team was displaced by Hurricane Ida ahead of the first week of the season. Star wide receiver Michael Thomas has had a passive-aggressive feud with Saints management this year as well. Thomas had ankle surgery in June and the timing peeved head coach Sean Payton. Fantasy football owners and sports bettors also have a vested interest in Thomas’ status for this football season. Below we will answer the question as to when will Michael Thomas be back and return from injury to the Saints.

When will Michael Thomas be back, return to the Saints?

Saints backers and fantasy football owners are wondering when will Michael Thomas be back and return to the playing field for New Orleans. The Saints placed Thomas on the physically unable to perform list in late August but the WR can come off the PUP list after Week 6. New Orleans has a bye in Week 6, so pencil in Thomas for a Week 7 return against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. If not Week 7 against the Seahawks, Halloween against Tampa Bay seems like a lock. Here is the Saints’ schedule around that time with dates.

  • Monday, Oct. 25: at Seahawks
  • Sunday, Oct. 31: vs. Buccaneers
  • Sunday, Nov. 7: vs. Falcons

Thomas’ rehab from injury is progressing nicely and the timetable sets up well for the Week 7 return.

“A lot of his rehab has been in Philadelphia with his ankle specialist. He had a recheck [in late August], he’s ahead of schedule,” Payton said. “He’s going to be a big part of what we do, and hopefully the sooner the better with his recovery.”
