Early Betting Action Suggests A ‘Wide Open’ 2020 Masters Tournament

Posted By FairwayJay on November 2, 2020 - Last Updated on November 16, 2020

The rescheduled 2020 Masters Tournament is approaching (Nov. 12-15), and this year’s final major has some storylines and odds moves worth watching. The two major champions this year have been climbing odds boards, and U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau is currently the favorite to win the Masters and his first green jacket with odds of +800 at DraftKings Sportsbook.

“DeChambeau is the top money grabber so far,” DraftKings director of sportsbook operations Johnny Avello told TheLines.

The 27-year-old DeChambeau won the U.S. Open at odds of +2800 in September. In early August, 23-year-old Collin Morikawa captured his first major at the PGA Championship and won at odds of +3300 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Morikawa’s odds to win the 2020 Masters are currently +2800 at DraftKings and +3300 at FanDuel Sportsbook. Morikawa’s shortest odds to win his first green jacket is +2500 at BetMGM.

Back in March and prior to the initially scheduled 2020 Masters in April, DeChambeau had odds of +3000 to win the Masters while Morikawa was being offered at odds of +8000.

William Hill director of trading Nick Bogdanovich expects a strong handle for The Masters, and added, “I think it’s wide open. Unless someone makes a ridiculously large bet like last year, we will be very balanced and a good earn to most of the top 25.”

Backing Brooks Koepka

A year ago, Brooks Koepka was completing a sensational golf season and was named PGA Tour Player of the Year. Koepka finished top 5 in all four 2019 majors winning the PGA Championship and finishing runner-up in the U.S. Open and Masters. When DraftKings Sportsbook posted odds to win the 2020 majors, Koepka was the favorite in three of the four majors and his odds were +1000 or less for each 2020 golf major.

Following injuries and struggles throughout the 2020 season, Koepka has fallen off and his odds to win the 2020 Masters are currently +2000 at DraftKings, +1800 at BetMGM and +1600 at FanDuel Sportsbook.

Bogdanovich told TheLines that Koepka is about sixth in bets and seventh in most money to win this year’s tournament at Augusta. “Koepka looked fairly healthy at Shadow Creek (CJ Cup), so have a feeling money will show for him at some point.”

The CJ Cup was Koepka’s first event in two months as he rehabbed and recovered from hip and knee injuries that started the end of 2019 when he slipped on wet concrete and injured his knee. He tore his patellar tendon, and has since suffered a torn labrum and played through hip pain before taking a break.

“I didn’t know how bad I felt until I actually feel good,” Koepka said before the CJ Cup, where he finished 28th. “It’s nice to be back.”

Still, at DraftKings Sportsbook, Johnny Avello told TheLines, “Tiger and Koepka are the second and third most bet in both handle and number of bets.”

A Tiger repeat?

Tiger Woods still draws major wagers at Augusta National and the Masters. He’s also the defending champion, having won the 2019 Masters for his fifth green jacket with a score of 13-under par.

Tiger and Rory are tops in tickets (bets) and most money bet to win the Masters,” Bogdanovich said.

BetMGM head of public relations Elisa Richardson and BetMGM data analyst John Ewing informed TheLines that Woods and Xander Schauffele are the most bet golfers to win the Masters two weeks ahead of the major event. Woods (7.9%) and Schauffele (7.6%) have the highest ticket count followed by DeChambeau (6.5%), Justin Thomas (6.1%) and Matthew Wolff (5.1%).

A sneaky Schauffele?

Schauffele has been a consistent market mover with his strong and steady play, and he picked up steam as the ticket count leader in most bets at the PGA Championship where he finished in 10th place. Since then, Schauffele had a strong run through the FedExCup Playoffs and finished 2nd in the Tour Championship behind Dustin Johnson, but Schauffele had the low 72-hole score at East Lake. Schauffele finished 5th at the U.S. Open and 2nd at the CJ Cup in Las Vegas before a top-20 and 17th place finish at the ZOZO Championship.

Schauffele, who finished one shot back and tied for second at the 2019 Masters with Koepka, is among the favorites to win his first green jacket. Schaufffele is +1400 with best odds of +1500 at FanDuel Sportsbook.
