As locals embrace the first official day of online sportsbooks in Maryland, officials also celebrate as all their hard work has come to fruition. The launch of Maryland online sports betting comes from a joint effort of both Maryland Lottery and Gaming and SWARC. The Maryland sports gambling industry will be forever changed.
Online Sportsbooks Enter Maryland Market
It took 554 days after Governor Larry Hogan signed HB 940 into law for mobile apps to launch. A combination of legislative differences and cross committee disagreements led to the long delay. John Martin, the director of Maryland Lottery and Gaming has expressed his excitement for the long awaited launch.
“We’re excited to reach this milepost and have mobile wagering available to everyone with Thanksgiving football games coming up tomorrow,” said Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin. “But at the same time, this is only a milepost. There are additional mobile sports wagering entities in the pipeline, and our work is ongoing as we guide them across the finish line.”
Martin predicts at least 21 Maryland online sports betting apps will be live in the Old Line state by the end of 2023. Today seven sportsbooks went live. 10 in total are approved already. SWARC agreed on a staggered launch. This means not all sportsbooks needed to be approved for the market to go live.
What Is Next For Maryland Sports Betting
More sportsbooks will continue to launch mobile apps in Maryland in the coming months. The regulations see up to 60 sports betting operators allowed in Maryland. Locals will continue to see multiple options for sports betting apps to wager with.
Currently, the list of live sportsbooks includes Barstool, BetRivers, BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and PointsBet. BetFred, Fanatics, and Parx Interactive have been approved but have not yet launched.
More applicants are expected to continue the pursuit of betting licenses in Maryland until the total is set. Each year could see more sportsbooks launching in the Old Line for the foreseeable future. Maryland bettors are only getting a glimpse of the options that will be available to them going forward. Maryland could become the market with the most options for its residents.
