March Madness rolls on with Friday of the first round. A couple shocking upsets headlined the Thursday schedule, like 13-seed Furman over 4-seed Virginia and 15-seed Princeton over 2-seed Arizona. Despite a Friday devoid of upsets thus far, there’s no shortage of action. 3-seed Xavier survived an upset bid from 14-seed Kennesaw State while Michigan State, Baylor, St. Mary’s, and Marquette took care of business.

The Cougars are guided by the fourth-rated adjusted defensive efficiency (per KenPom). MARQUETTE HANDILY BEATS VERMONT, 78-61

Marquette moves on to face 7-seed Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday. The Golden Eagles handled 15-seed Vermont, winning 78-61 in Columbus. The win was propelled by Kam Jones, who scored 18 straight points for Marquette to pull the game away.

UCONN LOOKS TO STAVE OFF UPSET VS. IONA, GAME UNDERWAY

4-seed UConn looks to take care of business against Rick Pitino and 13-seed Iona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Huskies closed as a -9.5 favorite and the game has an over/under that closed at 141 points. UConn vs. Iona is now underway.

CREIGHTON LEADS NC STATE GOING INTO HALFTIME

It’s a back-and-forth, low-scoring affair between Creighton and NC State as the Jays lead, 28-26. They head into halftime with 12 straight misses from beyond the arc. Sportsbooks line the Jays as a -4.5 live favorite.

PITT, IOWA STATE TRADE RUNS TO CLOSE OUT HALF

After going down 22-2, Iowa State went on a 19-4 run against Pitt and now trails by just seven heading into halftime. Despite taking over 30 field goals in the first half, Iowa State scored just 23 first-half points. Pittsburgh leads at the half, 30-23.

VERMONT GOES COLD FROM THREE

The Catamounts are just 1-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc in the second half and now find themselves in a 22-point hole. Six minutes likely remain in Vermont’s basketball season.

KAM JONES PUTTING ON A CLINIC

Kam Jones is downright unconscious for Marquette, scoring 18 straight for the Golden Eagles. Marquette leads Vermont by 13 with nine minutes to play. Olivier-Maxence Prosper finally breaks the streak with an and-one of his own.

MARQUETTE’S KAM JONES ON HEATER, SCORES 13 STRAIGHT

Marquette’s Kam Jones is on absolute fire, scoring the Golden Eagles’ last 13 straight points against Vermont. It’s heat check time in Columbus, Marquette up by 14.

IOWA STATE GOES ON 9-2 RUN TO CLIMB BACK INTO GAME

The deficit is still 11 points, but Iowa State is making sure their matchup with Pitt is a ballgame. The Cyclones go on a 9-2 run to bring them back into the game, down 24-13 with just over five minutes in the first half.

ST. MARY’S PUTS VCU AWAY LATE, WINS 63-51

5-seed St. Mary’s put the clamps on late to preserve a 63-51 victory over 12-seed VCU despite a brutal afternoon shooting from the field. The Gaels survive and advance to face the winner between UConn and Iona.

MARQUETTE RUN GIVES BREATHING ROOM VS. VERMONT

Five points can make quite the difference. A quick 5-0 run by Marquette puts the Golden Eagles up 10, forces Vermont to call a timeout. The Catamounts are still thinking upset with under 14 minutes left in the game.
