Offensive Regression On Deck?
As much as bettors will focus on which team will win or cover in this epic contest, I'm more intrigued by the total. It opened at 166.5 on Thursday night before it was quickly bet up as high as 174.5.
Like Alabama vs. BYU, the over is chalky, yet it might hit regardless. Nevertheless, I expect the Crimson Tide to undergo some negative shooting variance after hitting a tournament-record 25 triples in the Sweet 16. Duke's fifth-ranked adjusted defensive efficiency (AdjD) should stymie Alabama's dribble-drive attack more than the Cougars' subpar transition defense managed to accomplish.
Additionally, Cooper Flagg and Co. employ a below-average D-I pace — the antithesis of Alabama's run-and-gun attack. If Duke forces Nate Oats' squad to operate in the half-court, the under will likely cash in.
But with the total continuing to rise, I'm in no rush to wager on this angle.
auburn vs. Michigan state odds: spread, moneyline, total
Will Spartans Challenge Tigers?
Despite facing a nine-point second-half deficit, Auburn blitzed Michigan down the stretch en route to covering the spread and advancing to the Elite Eight. Conversely, MSU was fortunate to take down Ole Miss, failing to tally early momentum for a third straight game while struggling on the glass against a smaller team. However, the market is a reflection of these results.
Is there value in the Spartans? Unless their metrics are outdone by their effort, they're primed to go toe-to-toe with the Tigers on the boards. Their uptempo attack should also find success versus an Auburn defense that grades in the 54th percentile of transition defense on a points-per-possession (PPP) basis.
Bettors who believe Michigan State's frontcourt can challenge Johni Broome and Co. will undoubtedly back Sparty. That said, I'll wait to see how the market reacts before placing a wager.
