Tournament Notes
Per the MAAC tournament odds board, the cheapest price on the Gaels is -200 (courtesy of FanDuel Sportsbook). That’s equivalent to a healthy 66.67% implied probability. Rick Pitino’s team last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 2021 before it was upset by Rider in the quarterfinals last season. Hence, there’s plenty of motivation for this Iona bunch to return to March Madness.
The Gaels showcase a top-85 adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency (per KenPom), respectively. In particular, this Pitino-led defense fits his norm, as its surrendering the 10th-lowest 3-point clip (29.5%) nationally. They’re even forcing a top-60 turnover rate, driven by the 6-foot-2 Walter Clayton, Jr., who has developed into a sophomore ballhawk.
Iona is riding the nation’s fifth-longest winning streak, following a 2-3 straight-up stretch in January. One of those losses was a 23-point drumming to the hands of Quinnipiac. The Bobcats, a more offensive-oriented squad, own the second-shortest odds in the betting market. They’re paced by the backcourt duo of Dezi Jones and Matt Balanc, both averaging 12-plus points per game.
Baker Dunleavy’s unit will likely face off against aforementioned Rider in the conference semifinals, which it swept in their regular season series. Nevertheless, the most recent contest was a double-overtime affair, in which the Broncs blew a 16-point lead with 12:11 left in regulation.
