One of the biggest storylines in the NBA this week is the hamstring injury Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic suffered Thursday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The timing of it only made the situation more frustrating for Lakers fans. When the injury happened, Oklahoma City was already up 90-58, and Doncic had clearly been laboring throughout the night after already receiving treatment on the hamstring at halftime.

What makes this injury especially significant is how many downstream effects it could have. For starters, Thursday was only Doncic’s 64th game of the season. In order to qualify for major end-of-season honors like MVP and All-NBA, players need to hit the 65-game threshold. With only five regular-season games left for Los Angeles, even a mild hamstring strain could be enough to keep him from reaching that mark.

That is where this becomes more than just an injury update. The Lakers almost certainly care more about Doncic being healthy for the playoffs than they do about him securing an individual accolade, which means they could take an especially cautious approach here. Because of that, it is very possible we just saw Doncic’s final regular season game.

The hope for Los Angeles is that this is not something more serious. Hamstring injuries have been tricky across the league all season, and even minor strains can linger longer than expected. If this sidelines Doncic for any meaningful stretch, it would not only affect the Lakers’ final seeding in the Western Conference, but also their ceiling once the postseason begins.

That is why this matters so much. This is not just a Lakers story. It is an awards story, a seeding story and potentially a playoff story all in one. Until the MRI results come back, there is going to be real uncertainty around one of the league’s biggest stars and one of the West’s biggest contenders.
