Luka Doncic Return Update Gives Lakers Some Hope Ahead of Rockets Series
As the Los Angeles Lakers get ready for a playoff series against the Houston Rockets that starts this weekend, the status of two of their top scorers, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, remains one of the biggest storylines around the team.
Reaves is not expected back anytime soon and appears likely to remain sidelined into at least early May, which makes his status a much longer-term concern for Los Angeles. Doncic, though, still offers some reason for optimism, and that is where the latest update becomes important.
On Monday, more reporting surfaced about Doncic’s return to the United States and his next step with the Lakers. He spent the last couple of weeks in Europe getting specialized treatment as he works to recover from his Grade 2 hamstring strain and hopefully speed up the rehabilitation process. The latest expectation is that he will rejoin the team on Friday and then be re-evaluated, which should provide a much clearer picture of his path forward heading into the postseason.
That doesn't necessarily mean he will be ready to take the floor immediately. In fact, it still feels unlikely that Doncic would return Saturday right after getting back and being re-evaluated. But it is still a meaningful development because it keeps the door open for a possible return at some point during the series, rather than this becoming a situation with no real short-term hope.
That is why this update matters. The Lakers already know they are going to be shorthanded without Reaves, so any encouraging sign around Doncic carries extra weight. Even if he is not available for Game 1, getting him back around the team and moving into the reevaluation stage is at least progress.
More clarity should come right around the start of the series, but for now, the biggest takeaway is that Reaves still looks like a longer wait, while Doncic at least has a path that leaves some room for optimism.
