Loyola-Chicago vs. Oregon State Game Preview

It’s a battle of Cinderellas in the Sweet 16 for the right to play for a regional championship, but one team should have never been fitted for a glass slipper. That’s because Loyola-Chicago has been far better than an 8-seed all along.

Some might call that hindsight after knocking off top-seed Illinois (doing so in a rather workmanlike fashion might we add). Yet some advanced metrics showed more respect to the Ramblers. KenPom ranked Loyola-Chicago as a top-10 overall team in the country entering the tournament. They also rank top 10 in several key statistical categories: adjusted defensive efficiency (first), opponent offensive rebounding percentage (second), two-point field goal percentage (fourth) and effective field goal percentage (ninth).

The slow tempo Loyola-Chicago plays skews individual statistics lower, with only one player averaging double figures. However, Lucas Williamson shoots 37 percent from three, with Braden Norris and Keith Clemons both shooting above 40 percent.

On the inside, leading scorer Cameron Krutwig makes 58 percent of his shots. This could give Oregon State some trouble. The Beavers rank 238th in two-point field goal defense, but we’ve seen a big change in this area in the postseason. Oregon State completely shut down their first two March Madness opponents.

Both Tennessee and Oklahoma State shot under 34 percent from the field and 30 percent on three-point attempts. The Beavers are, in fact, a top-35 three-point defense, but shutting down the paint is a new March development.

Especially in a game where both teams like to play slow tempos with fewer possessions, that trend continuing would only broaden the path to another upset for Oregon State.
