2023-24 Season Outlook
Caesars Sportsbook has the best price for the Cardinals to win the national championship at +100000. They finished last year ranked 312th in adjusted defensive efficiency, per KenPom, which is unfamiliar territory for Louisville fans. This was their lowest defensive ranking since the 2010 season when the team finished 78th.
Down low, starting big man Brandon Huntly-Hatfield returns for his junior year. The 6-foot-10 Hatfield is a former top-25 recruit who has shown flashes on the defensive end and on the boards for the Cardinals but needs to take a leap in both regards if the defense is to improve. He was able to stifle Julian Reese in their meeting on Nov. 29, limiting the big man to a mere 6 points after he dropped a career-high 24, four days prior. If Hatfield fails to show more consistency, the team has depth behind him with 7-foot-1 freshman Dennis Evans and Emmanuel Okorafor. Evans is one of the prized freshman recruits entering the picture for Payne’s squad. His offensive game needs work, but his 7-foot-6 wingspan would make him an imposing presence on the defensive end. The defense should see natural improvement this year if the team cuts down on turnovers on the offensive end as well.
Offensive Outlook
Offensively, the Cardinals were plagued by turnovers, specifically of the unforced variety. Their 14.9 turnovers per game were the most of any team in the ACC by a wide margin. The main culprit in that regard was point guard El Ellis. His 3.8 turnovers per game made the Cardinals slip on the banana peel to begin their 2022 season, with three straight one-point losses as favorites of five points or more. This obviously was infuriating for Louisville fans, but the nine losses to open the season sent their fanbase over the edge.
The departure of Ellis (transfer to Arkansas) is bittersweet for their fanbase, but he’ll be supplanted by Illinois transfer Skyy Clark. While Clark doesn’t have the shot-making ability that Ellis possesses, his ball-handling skills made him one of the best in the class of 2022 freshmen. He failed to live up to the hype at Illinois however, averaging a mere 7 ppg before leaving the program. Payne is hopeful that a change of scenery can spark a fire in the former top-50 recruit.
Flanking Clark will be USC transfer Tre White, who made the Pac-12 All-freshman team a year ago. Aided by his 6-foot-7 frame, he has tremendous slashing ability and athleticism that can cause problems for their ACC foes.
The loss of Trentyn Flowers does hurt, however. The top-50 recruit did a complete 180-degree turn and decommitted from Louisville to join Australia’s National Basketball League. Before he left, Payne’s Cardinals boasted a top-10 recruiting class in the nation.
FINAL THOUGHTS on Louisville basketball odds
While Louisville’s national championship odds showcase them as an incredible longshot, there is optimism swirling in Louisville. The nine new faces that arrive make this team’s season a complete projection. In the new transfer portal era, teams can rebuild in a hurry. Louisville is no exception to that.
However, the hill is a steep one to climb in the ACC that boasts Duke, Miami, North Carolina and Virgnia at the top. That said, their odds to win the ACC in the regular season currently sit at , which is much more appealing than their championship odds. Best of luck betting Louisville basketball odds!
