NBA Title Odds: BetMGM Adjusts Clippers Positioning

On Monday evening, Yahoo Sports’ Chris Haynes reported that John Wall is planning on signing with Los Angeles after receiving a buyout from the Houston Rockets. In the process, Wall will surrender $6.5 million of the $47.4 million that was owed to him.

With the announcement expected shortly — coupled with already-established market interest — BetMGM modified the Clippers NBA title odds from +750 to +600. They possess the second-shortest championship futures behind the Warriors, whose odds have dipped from +550 to +500. Golden State knocked off Boston in the 2022 NBA Finals, gifting Steph Curry his fourth ring.

With the 31-year-old Wall unwilling to accept a backup role last season, along with the Rockets’ inability to find a trade partner, he didn’t suit up in a single game. Now, he’ll join Kawhi Leonard, a two-time NBA finals MVP who missed all of the 2021-22 campaign while recovering torn ACL, and seven-time All-Star Paul George.

As expected, the Clippers NBA title odds are lower than the Lakers (+1400). However, LeBron James & Co. saw their futures lessen from +2200 since the betting market opened. The Lakers championship futures have also generated the second-highest ticket count (11.2%) — one spot ahead of their inner-city rivals (6.3%).

Keep in mind, NBA title odds favorites are more likely to cash in than other pro sports leagues. Specifically, 10 of the previous 23 NBA champions were the preseason betting odds favorite.

Which Longshot Is Attracting Interest?

Some bettors are still willing to take a chance on a darkhorse despite the previous notion. In particular, the Pistons represent BetMGM’s biggest NBA title odds liability, as their futures have compressed from +75000 to +50000. The Lakers and Warriors follow suit in that department.

After selecting Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, general manager Troy Weaver snagged first-rounders Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren this time around. They’re unexpected to make a major splash in free agency, though, after rumors initially swirled around big man Deandre Ayton.
