Just over a month after the NFL suspended four Detroit Lions players for violating the league’s gambling policy, The Athletic is reporting that an unnamed player on the team is being investigated for the same concerns. More details are below, along with the Lions’ gambling markets (including the Super Bowl odds) for the 2023-24 season.

Nuggets on Lions Gambling Investigation
For starters, The Athletic isn’t naming the latest player involved because the inspection is taking place. The league’s investigator has yet to interview him as well. However, it was noted that the player didn’t possess a key role on last year’s team.
In total, five players have been tagged in the Lions gambling probe. On April 21, safety CJ Moore and wideout Quintez Cephus received indefinite suspensions for betting on NFL games. They drew releases that same day.
Additionally, second-year wideout Jameson Williams and fellow receiver Stanley Berryhill were each dealt a six-game suspension for placing wagers on non-NFL matchups — another violation of the league’s guidelines. The specific sport was never revealed. The Lions subsequently released Berryhill on May 9.
Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, who recorded four solo tackles in 2022-23, was slapped with an indefinite suspension for wagering on the NFL as well.
“Just make the right decisions, it was something I wasn’t aware of and it caught me,” Williams said. “It hit me out the blue.”
Lions coach Dan Campbell refuted this notion, stating that it’s been communicated to Williams while the NFL heavily stresses its policies. However, in Williams’ defense, he evidently was unaware of these rules at the time that he placed the wager(s).
Given the high expectations for Detroit in the betting market — pegged as the favorite to win the NFC North () — Williams’ absence to kick off the campaign is a sizable blow. The Lions are in their season opener at the defending champion Chiefs.
