Lightning Rangers Odds

The Stanley Cup odds are winding down with the final four teams remaining. With that in mind, I spoke with professional sports bettor “So Money” for his perspective on the Eastern Conference finals between the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers. His favorite Lightning – Rangers odds are included below.

Lightning – Rangers Odds

  • Editor’s Note: The best price on the Lightning to win the East is while the Rangers’ is .

What was your initial perception of the series price after New York knocked off Carolina?

I thought it was fair. I had Tampa Bay -185. I didn’t expect it to be much higher than that because of the Rangers’ home ice and the market’s respect for (New York goalie) Igor Shesterkin. I’m a little surprised the Rangers have been bet down, though, considering Tampa Bay has taken money throughout the playoffs.

Entering the playoffs, the Lightning possessed the fifth-shortest odds to win the Cup. What’s changed?

For one, their in-season acquisitions of (left wingers) Branden Hagol and Nicholas Paul are really paying dividends. They were trying to reestablish their third line again after losing what they built from their back-to-back Cup teams.

Into the playoffs, I didn’t feel like they had many matchup edges against Toronto. I was betting on the Maple Leafs, and Tampa Bay made me pay for it. But I adjusted against the Panthers, as the Lightning matched up much better in that series from the get-go.

Right now, I’m on the fence with them — especially since it’s a tough matchup against the Rangers in the sense that they don’t have a significant goaltending advantage again. I value goaltending a lot. New York could give them problems, but I’m not ready to bet against the Lightning at this moment.

What can you point to in terms of weighing goalies within your handicapping process?

It’s not the biggest factor in regards to win probability, but I weigh goaltending the most based on current form. So you have your season-long numbers where a goaltender has goals saved above expectations (GSaX), for example. But what I do is subjective to what I’ve seen (recently) and if I can correlate that to where my numbers are currently moving. That’s what I value the most.

How would you recommend bettors to attack the Lightning – Rangers odds?

If Tampa Bay gets the best of New York, it’ll likely be a quick series. Without home ice, it should be a Tampa Bay sweep (+750) or Tampa Bay in six games (+325) — if you’re higher on the Lightning. I’d side with the former if you’re looking for an option between the two, though.

If you think the Rangers have the advantage, it’s going to be a long series. Instead of betting New York’s series price, you should bet the Rangers to win in exactly seven games (+550).
