The 2021 Formula 1 season ended in a controversial fashion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, leaving many fans wondering if Lewis Hamilton would walk away from the sport after a crushing defeat.

Hamilton’s absence on social media and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff hinting at his retirement didn’t help stop the rumor mill.

But those worries went away when Mercedes finally confirmed on Feb. 16 that Hamilton will return for his 16th season. Early F1 betting odds suggest sportsbooks like his chances of winning an eighth overall title.

Lewis Hamilton Returns To Mercedes For 2022 F1 Season

It was no shock that Lewis Hamilton needed a break after the 2021 F1 season.

He entered the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the season, tied in points with Max Verstappen.

All signs pointed to Lewis winning his fourth consecutive championship until a safety car in the final laps came into play. The safety car allowed Max to close the gap on Lewis and get fresh tires.

Race Director Michael Masi made the decision to allow the safety car to leave the track for a one-lap shootout, where Verstappen and his fresh tires eventually overtook Hamilton to win the race and the championship.

The decision ultimately cost Masi his job. The organization removed him as race director on Feb. 17.

After Abu Dhabi, rumors began swirling. Mercedes hinted that Lewis could walk away forever after the disappointment and frustration over Masi’s call. Hamilton also went MIA on social media.

With a week to go until the first practice session of 2022, Mercedes finally gave fans some good news.

Hamilton Favored In 2022 Formula 1 Season Odds

Sportsbooks seem to think that Hamilton will be back with a vengeance this season. Early 2022 F1 betting odds have him at the top of the odds boards, edging out defending champ Verstappen.

The first practice sessions in Spain beginning Feb. 23 will indicate how well Mercedes’ new car performs with the new technical changes F1 is implementing.

The changes are designed to even the playing field a bit, so teams like Alpine, Ferrari, and McLaren can close the gap on Mercedes and Red Bull. Pirelli’s new 18″ wheels are designed to overheat less when they slide and promote closer racing. The comeback of wheel covers is intended to help teams decrease their downforce.

Next week will be the first glimpse into how the drivers handle their new cars and what each team did to set itself apart from the rest of the pack.
