raiders odds: Will Dobbs or Peterman shine?

After Las Vegas announced veteran Gardner Minshew as its starting quarterback to kick off the regular season at the Chargers, he and backup Aidan O’Connell are reportedly taking a seat in the preseason finale. The newly signed Nathan Peterman will inherit the bulk of the snaps.

Meanwhile, 49ers signal-caller Joshua Dobbs has received some respect from the market ahead of this game. San Francisco is as high as 7.5-point favorites after opening at -3.5.

O’Connell performed adequately off the bench during the first two exhibition contests, completing 21-of-29 pass attempts for 176 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The latter resulted in a pick-six in Saturday’s loss against Dallas, costing the Raiders an opportunity to cover the spread.

Conversely, Dobbs is still in a tussle for the backup gig in San Fran. Sunday against the Saints, he showcased his athleticism by finishing 12-of-21 passing for 133 yards and led the Niners with 25 rushing yards and a score on three carries.

Dobbs began last season as Kyler Murray’s backup in Arizona and started before Murray returned from a torn ACL. He was then traded to Minnesota, thanks to Kirk Cousins’ season-ending injury. After guiding the Vikings to consecutive wins, his increased interception rate led to his benching.

Whether Dobbs or fellow journeyman Brandon Allen is under center, San Francisco has an edge. While handicapping backup defenses is difficult, I also have a tough time swallowing the points with Peterman and Co., especially given the Raiders’ secondary concerns.

Preseason Trend

NFL preseason unders are 26-7 (78.8%) over the first two weeks, the best start for preseason unders in the last 20 years.

That said, we’ve seen the market correct itself in the final go-around of the preseason, dipping from 35.5 to 32.5 at most shops. As noted, backups on both sides make picking this market an arduous handicap. The lack of scoring incentive following multiple days of joint practices hasn’t helped, either.
