Kliff Kingsbury Extension

Surprising to few, the Kliff Kingsbury contract extension news hit Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. Kingsbury is coming off a season which he took the Arizona Cardinals to the playoffs, albeit with a swift exit. Kingsbury’s extension lasts through the 2027 season alongside GM Steve Keim.

What do Cardinals futures currently look like?

The Cardinals are currently to win Super Bowl 57. That’s sixth in the NFC but third in the loaded NFC West.

Of course, their road to a Super Bowl is more difficult than most other teams. The Los Angeles Rams are reigning Super Bowl champions and the San Francisco 49ers have appeared in two of the last three NFC Championship games. This isn’t new information for Arizona, who won’t be changing their current situation for awhile.

Their divisional odds this coming season are priced at while their odds to win the NFC are .

Kingsbury’s Season Splits: Reason For Concern?

Arizona began the season 10-2 (7-0 at one point), so their first-round exit to the Rams fell as an underwhelming season to many. Others saw it as a success, watching their Cardinals in the postseason for the first time since 2015. However, there’s a growing focus around Kingsbury’s record splits during certain parts of the season that dates back to his days at Texas Tech.

This season, the Cardinals lost five of their last six outings. In the two previous seasons, Arizona dropped five of their last seven and seven of their last nine.

At Texas Tech, Kingsbury’s teams did no better than 2-4 down the back stretch of the season, even going 0-for-5 in 2018 before he was hired to the Cardinals. In his career (at Texas Tech and with the Cardinals), Kingsbury is 9-15 (0.346) after the month of October (0.646 in September and October).

Granted, not every loss is due to poor coaching. Murray dealt with an injury during the back stretch of the last two seasons, severely limiting their offense. And regardless of these splits, Kingsbury is in Arizona to stay.

The Kliff Kingsbury contract news also comes amid an apparent contract dispute between the team and quarterback Kyler Murray. What’s important to note is Murray and Kingsbury are represented by the same agent. Could this be a precursor to a deal for the rising fourth-year quarterback?
