The Kentucky Oaks constitutes a $1.25 million Grade 1 stakes race at 1 1/8 mile. Moreover, it dons the winning filly a loop of lilies. Unsurprisingly, the event is nicknamed “Lilies for the Fillies.” Similar to the Kentucky Derby, each horse has a distinct path to this point. Let’s dive in.

Mimi Kakushi
Trained by Salem bin Ghadayer, Kakushi has tallied stakes wins wins in the 2023 UAE Oaks, 2023 UAE 1000 Guineas, and the 2022 Conditions.
The Alys Look
Trained by the well-known Brad Cox, who has a quartet of horses — Angel of Empire, Verifying, Hit Show, Jace’s Road — in the 2023 Kentucky Derby. The Alys Look has at least placed in four straight, including two wins.
Gambling Girl
Gambling Girl was trained by the controversial Todd Pletcher while bred in New York by Gallagher’s Stud. She’s ran second in two of her last three races.
Southlawn
Southlawn ran first in each of her last two, including topping fellow Kentucky Oaks participants Pretty Mischievous and The Alys Look in her last race at Fair Grounds.
Wonder Wheel
Wonder Wheel won or placed in six straight races prior to running a disappointing sixth in a 1 1/6-mile race at Keeneland.
Botanical
Another Brad Cox-trained filly, Botanical has been on a rampage at Turfway Park with four straight wins.
Wet Paint
The third and final Cox product in the Kentucky Oaks, Wet Paint has excelled at 1 1/16 recently with three consecutive wins. She also has two other top-two finishes and goes off as the early favorite here.
Promiseher America
Promiseher America has been running out of Aqueduct, where she has two straight wins including a victory over Gambling Girl at 1 1/8 mile in her last start on April 8.
And Tell Me Nolies
This filly comes off back-to-back second place runs at Santa Anita. The latter came in the Santa Anita Oaks, a Grade 2 race.
Flying Connection
Flying Connection has four wins in the last five races, the past two at 1 mile and then 1 1/16 mile at Sunland Park.
Defining Purpose
Defining Purpose ran off the board in two stakes races but then broke out in her most recent start, a Grade 1 at 1 1/16 mile at Keeneland. There, she ran first including besting third-place finisher and fellow Kentucky Oaks entrant Julia Shining.
Dorth Vader
A Florida product, Dorth Vader has been running at a high level with back-to-back Grade 2 starts. She ran fourth and first in those, with the win coming at 1 mile at Gulfstream Park.
Affirmative Lady
Affirmative Lady has peaked in her last two with wins at Gulfstream Park at 1 1/16 mile. The most recent came in a Grade 2 affair.
Pretty Mischievous
Pretty Mischievous won the Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra and then ran second to Southlawn in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks, both earlier this year.
Taxed
Taxed faced off with Kentucky Oaks favorite Wet Paint in her last three. She ran second in two of those (both to Wet Paint), most recently the Grade 3 Fantasy at Oaklawn Park.
Julia Shining
Todd Pletcher-trained Julia Shining, offspring of Curlin, has been running against these Kentucky Oaks horses frequently. She topped Affirmative Lady and Gambling Girl in a December Grade 2 race then ran third behind Defining Purpose in the Grade 1 Ashland.
Hoosier Philly
Longshot Hoosier Philly has run three straight Grade 2 races, finishing first, third and then fourth. The most recent at Fair Ground Oaks (G2) saw her run behind Southlawn, Pretty Mischievous, and the Alys Look.
