How horse racing Payouts are calculated
With betting in horse racing, the payout is based on parimutuel wagering. Parimutuel wagering works as a betting pool where winning bettors share the pot after the track takes out a percentage for operating it. The more bettors wager on a particular horse, the less each bettor would cash if the horse wins.

Favorites That Win Pay Less In Preakness
Most bettors wager on the favorite. So if there are fewer horses, even more bettors may lean in on betting on the favorite. This has historically been true with Preakness bettors being drawn to the Kentucky Derby winner. However, a Derby winner has not won the Preakness since Justify in 2018, one of only three to win the first two legs of the Triple Crown since 2014.
When a Derby winner also wins the Preakness, it leads to a small payout.

How Many Favorites Hit The Board?
Many things factor into the final payout in exotics. If a longshot wins the Preakness, the payout could still be higher than if the favorite wins the Kentucky Derby, but to really get big payouts in the Preakness, the favorite and/or second favorite needs to run off the board (outside the top three).

2024 Kentucky Derby Payouts
Mystik Dan was the winner and rewarded bettors nicely across Kentucky Derby payouts. The thoroughbred had 18/1 odds to win and, on a $2 wager, paid out $39.22.
Bettors who bet the horse to place took home $16.32 and how bets returned $10.
Bettors who cashed the exacta won $258.56 on a $2 wager. The trifecta, which includes the third-place horse, won $1,113.84 on a $1 wager. And the superfecta, which is the correct order for the first four horses, paid out $8,254.00 on a $1 bet.
