How Kentucky Derby Futures PoolS Work
Like in previous years, bettors can make $2 win and exacta bets.
All bets are final and non-refundable. If the horse is not entered, the bet loses. That’s why it’s a high-paying prop with long odds. It’s tough to run well enough and stay healthy enough to be one of the 20 three-year-olds in the Kentucky Derby.
The pool has 40 entries, with the final one a field bet: “All Other 3-Year-Old Colts and Geldings”. That is the 4-5 favorite in opening odds for Pool 2. Any male horse not listed in the pool falls into here.
Horses currently trained by award-winning trainer Bob Baffert are not currently listed in this pool (and fall under the field bet), as he is still suspended by Churchill Downs. If his horses are to qualify for the KY Derby, they will need to be transferred to another trainer and earn Derby points that way.
What Has Changed Since Pool No. 1?
Gamblers find incentives to back individual entries. Some noted adjustments have unfolded since Pool 1 ran from Oct. 31-Nov. 2, just before the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Fierceness, who captured the BC Juvenile in stunning front-running fashion, has vaulted from 99-1 to become the 15-1 Kentucky Derby chalk among individual horses. If he wages a strong winter and spring campaign, he will probably land in the 4-1 or 5-1 betting range as Kentucky Derby day approaches.
Anyone who took a stab at him for the 99-1 price feels like a genius now. It was a bold play, as Fierceness had flopped at 1-2 odds against his Breeders’ Cup opponents in his previous race in the slop.
It took quite a stand to reason that he would do well shipping from New York to Santa Anita, beat some prior rivals, and go two turns for the first time. All of that happened.
The triumph was definitive and underscores a key element of a futures wager. When one places this bet months before the Derby, the price is nice, as it rewards a leap of faith.

How Do Horses Qualify For The Kentucky Derby?
A horse in this pool will likely require two or three more prime-performance efforts to reach the Derby. That must coincide with a training staff that points to the Derby rather than other Triple Crown races or the summer and fall campaigns. Handicapping the preference of trainers thus figures into who merits a futures wager and how heavily it should be played.
Yes, it’s hard enough to pick a Kentucky Derby winner six minutes before post-time, let alone six months. But that’s why this one pays well.
Other Horses To Consider
Nash
Fierceness was not the only horse to soar in popularity. Nash authored an eye-opening victory in his second start, jumping from 99-1 to 20-1, the second individual favorite on the list.
He romped by 10 1/4 lengths at 1 1/16 miles at Churchill Downs, site of the Derby. It was a monumental step up on the heels of a loss at six furlongs in his debut.
Nash not only wired the field but pulled out after the field came to him in the final turn. Nine lengths of his margin came after the field turned for home. He covered the distance in 1:43.15 and secured a 95 Beyer speed rating, exceptional for a second career start.
Goodbye, anonymity. He’s on the radar now.
Definitive putaways signal the possibility of a horse being a top performer. Brad Cox trains him and has Medaglia d’Oro breeding, all significant. Medaglia d’Oro was a multiple stakes winner and two-time Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up.
Bentornato
Bentornato is an interesting study at 30-1. He is 4-for-4 on the Florida circuit, all sprints. He comes off a seven-furlong triumph in the $200,000 Affirmed at Gulfstream Park.
Should he be entered and win the 1/16-mile In Reality Stakes on Dec. 2, his route-running aspirations and potential Kentucky Derby pedigree will rise. Gamblers can take a 30-1 shot at him now or wait until the Jan. 19-21 pool Window 3 to better understand his potential.
Gambling strategies are varied for the futures. Some bettors sprinkle some money into each pool opportunity. That can bolster their overall positions and allow them to catch a major trend inexpensively.
Some gamblers will take several high fliers early, hoping that at least one blossoms. Cox, for instance, had eight entries in Pool 1, including Nash at 99-1. A bettor who likes Cox could easily have put a couple of dollars on all of his horses and thus scooped up the rise of Nash.
Strategies are numerous, and one thing is certain: if the horse you bet on now reaches the Derby, you’re getting a price.
Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.
