2024 Kentucky Derby Post Position Draw And Morning Line odds

Below, you will find the post position for each horse, along with morning-line odds. Only 20 horses can enter the race. Any horses numbered beyond 1-20 are also-eligibles (AE) and require another horse in the field to scratch before Friday morning to gain entry into the starting gate.

Advance wagering becomes available close to 24 hours prior, typically Friday morning for Derby betting. Any horses scratched after wagering opens cannot be replaced by an also-eligible, meaning fewer than 20 horses would then run in the 150th Derby.

How Do Kentucky Derby Odds Work?

Unlike betting on fixed odds, horse-racing odds continue to move until the gates open. Perhaps you’re familiar with a frantic ticket counter scene with dozens of people clamoring each other to place their bets. That represents a horse-racing counter.

Even if you place your bet today, your odds will continue to move until post-time. Often, sharp bettors will wait until the last minute to avoid tipping their hands, causing a flux of people to bet their horse and ultimately water down their odds.

Kentucky Derby Information

The 2024 Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the American Triple Crown series for three-year-old thoroughbreds. It’s held yearly on Saturday, May 4, at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. The track has presented the race since 1875. The Derby is run at 1 1/4 miles and is arguably the world’s most famous horse race event.

The winning horse becomes the only horse eligible to complete that year’s Triple Crown, but he must win the two other legs of the series.

The Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore is the middle Grade I race on Saturday, May 18. The final leg is the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 8. In 2024 and 2025, the Belmont Stakes is set for Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., because of ongoing renovations at Belmont Park.
