The Kentucky Derby is still two months away, but bettors can already get bets down on a pool of contenders this weekend.
The field for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 has been set. The pool consists of four (4) separate wagering pools with a minimum $2 Win and Exacta wager. The winner of each pool is determined by the official first-place winner of the Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2020.
Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 3 runs from March 6 at 12 p.m. ET through March 8 at 6 p.m. ET. In addition to Win and Exacta wagering, a Kentucky Oaks/Derby Future Double is part of the Pool 3 wagering menu. Bets can be placed at Churchill Downs Racetrack, online wagering outlets like TVG racebook, and satellite wagering centers across North America.
What is a future wager pool?
The interest in the Kentucky Derby continues to grow, and the Future Wager is evidence of the momentum and betting interest. Total handle for Pool 1 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager from Nov. 28 through Dec. 1 was $350,312. That included $284,317 in the Win pool and $65,995 in Exactas, which allows bettors to pick the first- and second-place finisher. Pool 2 was Feb. 7-9 and totaled $590,911 ($439,694 in Win pool and $151,217 in Exactas), which was an increase of 10.7% from the prior year.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows fans to bet early on the Run for the Roses and wager on which horse they feel will earn a spot in the starting game and ultimately win the Kentucky Derby. Future Wager bets typically offer larger payouts than betting the same horse on race day, as the risk is betting on a horse that may not qualify for the Kentucky Derby with the Derby field not yet finalized. Also, a horse may qualify for the Derby but withdraw, scratch or be injured before the race, adding another risk to betting on the future pool. All future wagers are final and there are no refunds.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager consists of 23 individual horses and betting interests plus a mutuel field for 24 total entries. Pool 3 horses and odds are below and Tiz the Law is the favorite. He also closed as the 8-1 favorite in the KDFW Pool 2 after winning the Holy Bull Stakes on Feb. 1.
