Matchup Preview
Due to their combination of pace and terrible defense, the Sacramento Kings have long been maybe the top team against which a player can pile up numbers. That’s a bit less true this year, unfortunately for those hoping to print on Kawhi Leonard props to the over. The Kings are down to 12th in pace, and their defense is merely bad at 23rd (per Cleaning The Glass) instead of terrible.
That said, just looking at scheduling factors, this looks like a pretty good spot for Leonard and his brethren. The Clippers are obviously extremely well-rested coming out of the All-Star break for their first game. Additionally, the Kings played last night at home and must travel on a back-to-back, albeit within the state.
As far as the way the Kings defense sets up, things look pretty good for Leonard here. Surprisingly — given their weak efficiency — the Kings allow mostly the right kinds of shots. They defend the 3-point line at a superb level, and they’re a bit above average guarding the rim. They’ve been very good at forcing mid-range 2-pointers.
Fortunately for Leonard, such shots make up the vast majority of his diet. That means he should have little trouble getting to his preferred spots. The only wings the Kings have with any size are Keegan Murray and Harrison Barnes. Neither should give Leonard any serious trouble.
Overall, it looks like a pretty good spot for Leonard to pile up some points as long as he doesn’t come out of the break cold.
In terms of his other stats, there isn’t much standing out in most senses. Leonard’s rebounding has been solid as usual, and the Kings rebound at an average rate. A look at his 3-pointers under would seem to make sense given the Kings’ defensive tendencies. The market seems to have this priced in at .
