Is Kansas Sports Betting Legal?
Yes, sports betting in Kansas is legal, here is a bit of background including a timeline with the key updates.
In early May 2022, Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly signed the Senate 84 Bill (SB84), which called for the legalization of both retail and Kansas online sports betting sites statewide. The two legislative chambers had agreed on appropriate language for the bill on April 1, 2022.
The Kansas sports betting law authorizes the Kansas Lottery (KSL) to contract with "lottery gaming facility managers" (LGF) in order to add retail and online sports betting to the gaming operations that they are conducting on behalf of the KSL.
LGF managers may offer up to three online sports betting platforms, as long as they’ve been approved by the Kansas Gaming and Racing Commission (KGRC). Kansas’ sports betting law enables these LGF Managers to strike deals with up to 50 marketing entities, including professional sports teams. Since KS has four casinos, in practice that means that technically 12 legal sports betting apps are able to launch.
The first day of service on Sept. 1, 2022, witnessed the launch of six top online sportsbooks. FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM are all viable options for Kansas sports bettors. This was part of a soft launch, which saw success. To this day, we are still seeing new brands join the KS sports betting scene.
Timeline breakdown
So now you have a rough idea of how sports betting came to Kansas and that sports betting is legal, here is a breakdown of the key events so far:
- May 12, 2022: Governor Laura Kelly signed SB 84 into law which then took effect July 1, 2022.
- Sept 1, 2022: Soft launch of Kansas sports betting began with six operators at the time.
- Sept 8, 2022: Full launch statewide, allowing all eligible bettors (21+) to wager online or in person.
- Nov 14, 2023: Barstool Sportsbook rebranded as ESPN Bet
- Jan 4, 2024: The first tribal run sportsbook in KS operated by Kambi opened in the Prairie Band Casino & Resort in Mayetta.
- March 28, 2024: Fanatics Sportsbook launched
- Aug 6, 2025: Bet365 Sportsbook officially launched in Kansas making it the seventh online sportsbook in the state
Response From Tribal Gaming
In addition to commercially operated casinos, the new SB84 bill also allows for the state’s Indian Tribes to offer sports betting in accordance with the "Indian Gaming Regulatory Act."
Upon request from any particular Tribe, the lottery may authorize any sports betting platform through the governor’s office. Any federally recognized Native American tribe can request the ability to operate a sports betting platform.
Top Kansas Sports Betting Apps
So where can you get started? If you prefer to play from the comfort of your own home or on the go, you are probably looking for a good app. Here are a few of my top recommendations for Kansas sports betting:
FanDuel Sportsbook
FanDuel Sportsbook has been a leading brand in the US sports betting landscape, largely thanks to its success in the DFS industry and strong marketing budget. Owned by international betting giant Flutter, FanDuel is backed by one of the more experienced teams out there and features a huge menu of betting options in a ton of different sports popular worldwide. Operating in 20+ states, if you have legal betting available, FanDuel likely has a product in your state.
They have one of the best user experiences out there, from the software to the timely responses by customer support as well as my favorite feature the industry-leading same-game parlay offering. It also has very competitive pricing, which you'll frequently find more generous than its competitors.
Currently, new users can get $300 in bonus bets if their first bet of at least $5 wins. Just sign up through the link above to get started.
Caesars Sportsbook
Authors of perhaps the most recognizable ad campaign in the industry, Caesars Sportsbook has added Kansas to the 20+ states in which it already operates. Backed and operated by one of the biggest casino chains in the US, Caesars Sportsbook has a stated goal of treating its customers like the emperor himself, starting with one of the premier sign-up offers in the industry.
Caesars Sportsbook has made headlines by offering some of the most generous sign-up bonuses in the business. BetMGM Sportsbook
BetMGM, with Jamie Foxx playing a starring role in a national ad campaign, has made a significant impact in US sports betting as well. It also operates in 20+ states and naturally has live retail home bases in the many MGM properties littered throughout the country.
BetMGM's integration with the MLife rewards program gives players the opportunity to earn points that can increase their status with MGM and lead to perks like high-value hotel stays and meals at many properties. Additionally, they have tons of odds boosts and other promos on a weekly basis.
Plus, as a new player, you can get up to $1500 in bonus bets paid back if your first bet does not win, this is a fantastic offer, especially if you are testing the site out or trying out a sportsbook for the first time.
Fanatics Sportsbook
Fanatics Sportsbook launched in KS in March 2024 after taking over PointsBet's operations. As we read in the Fanatics Sportsbook Review, the brand is focusing on its high-speed app, which allows users to easily discover marquee games and markets they wish to wager on. That speed is something which I can vouch for, it is very easy to use and I experienced zero lag when placing multiple bets.
Its rewards program, FanCash, is unique as well. FanCash can be redeemed for bonus bets on the site or discounts on apparel at Fanatics. Not only that, new users can make the most of the current offer where when you bet $50, you can get $250 in FanCash.
DraftKings Sportsbook
DraftKings Sportsbook has one of the leading market positions and may be the most widely accessible sportsbook in the US, operating in 20+ states and counting as of August 2022. Known initially for its market-leading daily fantasy sports (DFS) offering, DraftKings was among the first sports betting operators launching in the US after the 2018 repeal of PASPA that cleared the way for legal sports betting.
DraftKings Sportsbook offers not only one of the best sportsbook promotions, but access to a huge range of betting options on a very popular mobile app. They have a robust rewards program and offer multi-million dollar contests for big events like NFL season and March Madness. Kansas Sports Betting: What You Need To Know
And...we're off! Six different sportsbook apps have opened their virtual doors in Kansas as of Sept. 1, 2022. Kansans can now begin to undertake the procedures outlined below for starting their accounts with their sportsbook app of choice.
Here's what to do in order to get started:
Simply click through one of our links above and choose the appropriate format for your device. The downloading and installation of your chosen app will involve the same process as any other type of app.
Look for a button at the top right portion of the screen. It will say "register" or "sign up." If you don't see it, click the button to log into your account (even though you don't have one yet) and look for the appropriate link for new players.
Some states have strict regulations that limit the betting on things like in-state college teams, college sports props, or things like awards markets that are decided only by voters.
Fortunately, neither Kansas law nor regulations indicate any such restrictions. Feel free to place your wagers on the Jayhawks, the Wildcats, or whatever college team strikes your fancy.
Customers 21 years of age and older will be eligible to sign up for accounts at legal Kansas sportsbooks.
Some states have rules restricting the betting ability of those employed by professional teams. KS is one of those states, and further bans anyone with any ability to interfere with the fairness of the wager, both in terms of the principals involved in the game, like players, coaches, and trainers, and in terms of the sportsbook employees and anyone related to them.
Deposits and withdrawals can change on both a state-by-state and sportsbook-by-sportsbook basis. So, you'll need to consult your local sportsbook to see what they offer. Generally speaking, with legal online sportsbooks, you can deposit or withdraw in a variety of ways that may include:
- Online bank transfer
- Credit/debit card
- PayPal
- Cash at retail partner
The above list certainly isn't exhaustive. See what your local preferred sportsbook offers and choose the accounting option that's right for you.
Every online sportsbook you use should have an account or player page that serves as the hub of your experience. From there, you can change key settings, manage your betting with limits, etc.
Somewhere in there, you should find a page with tax information regarding your sports betting account. For example, on FanDuel Sportsbook's web interface, just click your photo in the top right. "Tax information" should be one of the links between the withdraw/deposit buttons and the option to log out.
Kansas Sports Betting Odds
While Kansas doesn't currently host any professional sports teams, it does boast major collegiate competitors Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats.
Additionally, nearby Kansas City, Missouri -- right across the border to the east -- has professional franchises Kansas City Chiefs and Kansas City Royals that call the city home.
Undoubtedly, these teams will garner the lion's share of Kansas sports betting interest once the market goes live. Here's a look at some of the best odds you can find on each of these teams.

Legal Kansas Sports Betting
Operators in Kansas will pay a 10% tax on both retail and online bets they book. That's generally considered an operator-friendly number and should encourage companies to compete in the Kansas sports betting market.
A great deal of politicians throughout the state are attributing the new law’s success to an amendment that mandated 80.0% of the state’s revenue from gaming operations be reinvested into a fund set up for the financing of a new professional sports facility in Kansas. The law dictates that the majority of proceeds resulting from the "Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas" (APSK) fund have been put in place to cover any cost relative to Kansas’ mission for a new sports franchise within the state, including construction and revitalization cost.
The first public draft of the Kansas sports betting bill can be seen here, after the state's attorney general's office approved a second draft of regulations from the Kansas Lottery.
Kansas Sports Betting Revenue Projections
Preliminary revenue figures estimated by the Kansas Lottery Commission indicate that sports wagering could bring in excess of $40 million of revenue over the next five years. According to state representative Paul Waggoner, the state itself should only anticipate $5 million in revenue.
"We’re not going to be balancing the budget on the revenues coming in from sports betting, but every little bit helps," Gov. Kelly said.
One thing helping Kansas is the fact several neighbors, particularly Missouri, have failed to pass any sports betting legislation. That means extra customers crossing borders and pouring more revenue into Kansas.
