The Kansas sports betting market has been off to a great start, according to the Kansas Lottery. The Sunflower State has seen approximately 2.4 million bets place between September 1 and September 11. The Kansas Lottery report also reveals that local bettors have won more than $47 million betting on sports during that time.
Legal sports betting in Kansas has already established itself as a thriving new market.
Locals Embrace Sports Betting
Kansas locals took no time to jump on the sports betting bandwagon once the market went live. This was evident with the strong soft launch which saw 1.5 million geolocation checks approved within just eight hours of activity.
Fans continued to wager heavily into the NFL season with the Kansas City Chiefs being the most bet on team during that stretch. The Chiefs were followed by the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas State Wildcats, and the Kansas Jayhawks
Two standout games that saw a lot of action according to the Kansas Lottery were the Kansas City Chiefs vs. the Arizona Cardinals matchup in Week 1 as well as the Buffalo Bills vs. The Los Angeles Rams game. There was also reportedly a lot of action placed on the Kansas Speedway NASCAR race.
Retail sports betting also saw a lot of interest from locals. The Hollywood Casino 400 launched its Barstool Sportsbook on September 11. This launch broke the new property opening record for Penn National Gaming.
Can Kansas Sustain This Action?
The Kansas market should continue to thrive throughout at least the NFL season. Looking at a market such as Arizona which also launched in time for the NFL season last year, the Grand Canyon State sustained a top 10 sports betting spot monthly well into Super Bowl Weekend. In fact, within its first year, Arizona became a top 10 betting state in the nation.
Kansas is not as populated nor does it have as many professional teams as Arizona. However, the Sunflower State’s strong sports culture and attraction of residents from neighboring Missouri should see the continued growth of its betting market going forward.
It will be interesting to see what the full revenue numbers are once released after the first full month of activity.
