Yankees The Clear Favorites To Retain Soto
Soto’s agent is Scott Boras. Boras will ask for the biggest pile of dough imaginable, and he and Soto won’t settle for anything less than a historic haul.
Generally speaking, only a few teams are financially positioned to offer such a haul. One of those teams happens to be the Yankees, which happens to be the most recent team Soto played for. They had a successful season at the team (AL No. 1 seed) and personal (8.1 fWAR) levels.
Therefore, it should come as little surprise that the Yankees top Juan Soto’s next team odds.
The Yankees, much maligned for their lack of postseason success despite heavy roster investment, just had their best season in over a decade. Taking a significant step back in 2025 because they wouldn’t pay to retain Soto would be a bad look, and fans would not be happy.
That’s especially true when there isn’t a remotely close consolation prize. If the Yankees strike out on Soto, the next-best free agent they could theoretically sign would be Alex Bregman.
A reunion makes a lot of sense for both sides. Soto and his agent will want the peak of the market. The Yankees can offer those dollars plus a winning environment where Soto has already shown he can thrive. We’ll likely see Soto in pinstripes for the next decade or more.
Which Other Teams Have A Chance?
The Mets took a reset season and still made it to the brink of a World Series appearance after winning a tight NL wild-card race. Might they be ready to spend big again?
If so, Soto would be a strong fit. The Mets only have one starting-caliber OF (Brandon Nimmo). They share a division with two other strong teams, the Phillies and the Braves, so standing pat isn’t a great option.
Owner Steve Cohen has shown a willingness to open the wallet thus far. If that continues, look for the Mets as a live underdog here.
One would always expect the world-champion Dodgers to be in on any big-name free agent. However, they may be at the top of their spending range after already fielding a $328 million roster in 2024, per Roster Resource.
Perhaps the Giants make sense if you’re looking for a dark horse. They underachieved in 2024, thanks partly to injuries after they were projected as a fringe contender. The team has shown a willingness to spend in the past, reportedly offering Judge a larger contract than the one he ultimately signed with the Yankees.
Boras clients typically do not take such discounts. If the Giants offer Soto the biggest deal, he’ll sign there.
