NBA Bans Jontay Porter For Life: Betting Investigation Reveals Eye-Popping Violations
Jontay Porter has received a lifetime ban from the NBA for his involvement in a sports betting scandal. The NBA’s investigation found that Poter “disclosed confidential information” to sports bettors in at least one game. The Toronto Raptors Forward was also found to have wagered 13 times using an associate’s account. One bettor, using information on Porter, wagered $80,000 on a parlay using Porter’s Unders and won $1.1 million.
Porter Banned For Sports Betting Violation
The NBA’s investigation revealed that from January to March 2024, Porter placed 13 bets on NBA games under an associate’s account. The wagers ranged from $15 to $22,000, with the total wagers amounting to $54,094. Porter’s total payout for the wagers was $76,059, resulting in net winnings of $21,965, according to the NBA press release.
While none of these wagers were games where Porter played, three of the bets were parlays that included one Raptors game in which Porter wagered that the Raptors would lose. All three of these wagers resulted in a loss.
NBA Using Porter To Set Example
Jontay Porter was confirmed to have limited his own game participation to influence the outcome of his bets. Prior to the game on March 20 between the Raptors and Sacramento Kings, Porter disclosed his injury to NBA bettors and proceeded to play only four minutes in the game. Bettors used this insider information to wager on Porter’s Unders and won.
“There is nothing more important than protecting the Integrity of the NBA competition for our fans, our teams, and everyone associated with our sport, which is why Jontay Porter’s blatant violations of our gaming rules are being met with the most severe punishment. While legal sports betting creates transparency that helps identify suspicious or abnormal activity, this matter also raises important issues about the sufficiency of the regulatory framework currently in place, including the types of bets offered on our games and players. Working closely with all relevant stakeholders across the industry, we will continue to work diligently to safeguard our league and game.”
Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner.
Information about Porter’s suspicious sports betting activities was first raised to the NBA by licensed sportsbooks. Additionally, an organization that works to monitor betting activity aided in the findings. The investigation is still ongoing and may result in more findings. In addition, the sportsbook account that won $1.1 million betting on Porter’s Unders has been frozen.
