Joel Embiid Right Back Among NBA MVP Favorites After Monster Weekend

Written By Zach Tilley on November 14, 2022

Joel Embiid had some kind of back-to-back performance this past weekend in Philadelphia. The Sixers 7-foot, 280-pound center started off with a 42-point performance on Saturday against the Hawks. He modestly added 10 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals in 40 minutes of action.

On Sunday against the Jazz, Embiid followed up with 59 points, 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 7 blocks … all within 37 minutes of a regulation game. Embiid is known to fill up the stat sheet when he is fully healthy, but my goodness. He nearly had a 59-point quadruple-double! The 76ers won both games, by the way, and social media exploded with some phenomenal facts and opinions.

This one, in particular, should delight Philly fans…

The MVP Race

Joel Embiid was averaging 27.7 PPG before the weekend began, but has now upped that number to 32.3 PPG. Only Luka Doncic, Steph Curry, and Jayson Tatum are ahead. Christian Cipollini, a Sports Trader over at BetMGM, alerted TheLines that Embiid’s NBA MVP odds have shifted from 25/1 to 12/1.

“Outside of Giannis, nobody has really pulled away in the NBA MVP race so far,” Cipollini said. “With Harden out for a month, if Embiid keeps up this trend he will be right back in the thick of the hunt.”

The Sixers do not play again until Friday, when they will host Giannis and the Bucks. Embiid’s daily prop numbers should be interesting to keep an eye on. His points market will surely rise, but could still be worth a play with the right matchup. He has the ability to control the game from so many angles, and usually gets the benefit of the doubt with officials – which results in him seeing the free throw line quite a bit.
