It’s not a big field, but it’s a dandy. On Saturday, the $500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes unfolds at Saratoga. Just five horses make up Jim Dandy Stakes odds. They will go 1 1/8-mile in this showcase, and the field consists of three top finishers from the Belmont Stakes, another from the Kentucky Derby and an upstart with pedigree at a lower level. Post time is 5:45 p.m ET. Here is a look at the field, pace scenario and my betting strategy after Wednesday’s draw.

Gamblers can access this showcase via the FanDuel Racing app, along with horse racing odds all day long from across the nation. New FanDuel Racing users can click PLAY NOW below to get their first win bet up to $20 insured. If it loses, you’ll get it back as site credit.

2023 Jim Dandy Stakes Odds

Bettors look for the newest force to emerge in the balanced three-year-old thoroughbred racing picture. With three different Triple Crown race winners (Mage, National Treasure, Arcangelo) and a peaking Haskell Stakes winner (Geaux Rocket Ride), this is a matter of figuring out who is next.

This race captures the national racing imagination for a major reason beyond its purse. The last two winners, Essential Quality and Epicenter, went on to win the Travers and then an Eclipse Award. The Jim Dandy is a prep for the Aug. 26 Travers at Saratoga.

Here are the morning line odds. Remember, unlike sportsbooks, Jim Dandy Stakes odds will not lock in when you place the bet. Horse racing is parimutuel wagering. Odds lock when the race begins.

Past Performances

1. Disarm (6-1)

Still waiting to win his big one. Prevailed at Saratoga last summer. Ran a good second in the Louisiana Derby and then a closing fourth in the Kentucky Derby. Comes off a victory in the Matt Winn. Good news is that he doesn’t have to pass a wall of horses. Bad news is that the No. 4 horse, Saudi Crown, may get an uncontested lead. Dangerous if he can run into the after-effects of a speed duel.

2. Forte (7-5)

Has he peaked? Some are wondering after he needed to move heaven and earth to nip Mage in the Florida Derby and then suffered an injury that pulled him out of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner ran a good second in the Belmont Stakes but was outgunned by a more determined Arcangelo.

Needs to show he is elite again. This is the chance. Will be stalking and looking to pounce around the turn. Gets blinkers. Connections want him focused in this one.

3. Hit Show (5-1)

Ran better than most expected to annex a fourth-place dead heat with Angel of Empire in the Belmont. Has been running a level below these, but gamely. Would benefit from a duel. Keep an eye on him if he drops in company in his next race.

4. Saudi Crown (4-1)

Intrigue. Figures to play come and catch me. Drilled a 44.63 half as the Dwyer pacesetter and nearly held on, getting second. Must add a second turn, yes, but what happens if he has the lead and he’s got a more temperate fraction like 46.50 for the half? That’s why he’ll get some betting money.

5. Angel of Empire (3-1)

Couldn’t get there in the Kentucky Derby. Couldn’t get there in the Belmont. But always looks ready to give that one sweeping move. Has to be a little better than he has been to win this, but not too much.

Pace Scenario For Handicapping Jim Dandy Stakes Odds

Veteran jockeys will probably let Saudi Crown set the pace while keeping contact with him. The strategy for the remaining four horses is to be in contention at the turn and try to win it down the lane.

You never know in this game. Preakness winner Early Voting got out to an unhurried lead in the 2022 Dandy and had the lead coming for home in a short field. Everyone passed him. Even when things set up, they don’t always pay off.

Betting Considerations And Potential PiCKS FROM Haskell Odds

Small win bet on No. 2 Forte if odds are even money or above. Any lower, no thanks.

If he’s your horse, I’d nominate a $20 straight exacta with the second horse of your choice. Even if the $2 exacta paid $10, you get $100 for $20.

If you like anybody else, drill the win bet, as you will get a price. Forget the spreading and take a stand on a horse. Good luck betting Jim Dandy Stakes odds.
