Ex-Vikings running back Dalvin Cook has agreed to sign on with the Jets, the team announced Tuesday. Cook reportedly inked a one-year, $8.6 million deal with Gang Green. NFL front offices and futures odds apparently have something in common — neither appear to value running backs. Before signing Cook, New York’s Super Bowl odds were set at . They remained that way after Cook joined the backfield.

As of this writing, the best odds for the Jets to claim the Lombardi Trophy are +1800 at both BetMGM and FanDuel Sportsbook. They’re priced at +1600 at Caesars and +1700 at BetRivers, respectively. For context, they were +2500 to begin the offseason. Nevertheless, their alternation had everything to do with the obtaining Rodgers in April.

Cook’s decision to jump onboard with Gang Green capped off a couple of speculation-filled months for one of the league’s most prolific tailbacks. The Vikings released Cook in June after failing to find a trade partner for him. Cook initially agreed to a five-year, $63 million contract extension with the team in 2020. However, only $2 million of his salary was guaranteed in 2023. He would’ve counted for $14.1 million against the cap if he remained on the roster.

Less than 24 hours after agreeing to terms with Cook, Bryce Hall rejoined the Jets’ backfield. Hall, who served as their leading rusher in 2022, is 10 months removed from ACL surgery. He’ll reportedly be ready for Week 1, but his workload early on is unknown.

Evaluating Jets Odds With Cook

Despite dealing with a finger injury for much of last year, Rodgers finished No. 21 in dropback EPA among qualified quarterbacks. He had the same ranking in games against top-10 passing defenses.

That said, Rodgers has plenty of familiarity with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett from their Packers days, along with free-agent signees Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb. He’ll even have Garrett Wilson — the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year — at his disposal. But similar to last season, his protection is questionable at best. Consider that 38-year-old Duane Brown anchors his blind side, and the other tackle spot is up in the air with Mekhi Becton’s timeline unknown.

Even with a vaunted receiving core, four-time NFL MVP’s ceiling is a valid concern. Cook’s explosive playmaking doesn’t change that, especially since he’s playing behind a worse offensive line than in Minnesota.
