Before Wood takes the field, Caesars Sportsbook users can wager whether he’ll reach base, drive in at least one run, or hit a longball in his first action in the majors. Acquired in the Juan Soto trade with the San Diego Padres in July 2022, he leads all Triple-A qualifiers in batting average (.353), on-base percentage .463, and OPS (1.058) during 52 games for Rochester.
During this span, he’s also produced 10 homers and 10 stolen bases, becoming one of 20 players to reach double-digits in those areas at the minors’ highest level. Considering he missed a month after suffering right hamstring tightness on May 23, his productivity is even more noteworthy. Since June 18, Wood’s return has culminated with an 8-for-24 (.333) stretch, including a homer and five walks in his last seven games.
Not only has Wood cut his strikeout rate by roughly 15 percentage points from last season to 2024, but his .389 wOBA on breaking balls shows his diverse plate coverage. The left-handed bat will be able to show he can hit southpaws in his debut, with the Mets veteran David Peterson taking the bump. A 5.01 FIP hovers over Peterson’s respectable 3.67 ERA, foreshadowing potential regression in the near future.
Peterson will oppose fellow lefty MacKenzie Gore, another coveted prospect in the Soto deal. Gore’s strikeout prop is set at , which may seem a tad low given his 3.60 ERA and a 3.14 FIP. Still, the Mets have pounded left-handed pitching.
