Matchup Preview

Harden has been rolling of late. The veteran’s last seven games have produced averages of 24.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 9.4 assists. The recent play would point toward betting on his points over in this spot. However, this matchup for Harden will not be a simple one. The Miami defense allows the second-fewest points per game in the league (108.6). They rank middle of the pack in giving up assists to their opponents (15th) while allowing the ninth-fewest total rebounds.

Where Harden can exploit the Heat defense is via the 3-ball (Over/Under /). Miami ranks ninth-worst in opponent 3-point percentage allowed. Harden hasn’t shied away from his 3-point attempts of late. He averages eight attempts per game over his last four contests, making an average of 3.75. He has made over 2.5 3-pointers in 26 games so far this season.

The minutes played over his last eight games have also driven up Harden’s stats. He hasn’t seen less than 37 minutes of action in seven of his last eight games. Philadelphia enters this matchup with a 39-20 record. They are trying to make a run at the No. 1 seed in the East, sitting four games back of Boston for the top spot. This push for the top seed resulted in head coach Doc Rivers squeezing his starters for a few extra minutes per game.

Surprisingly, this will be the first head-to-head matchup between these two teams this season. Previous player performances against a particular team are essential to track in the NBA. Often, a specific player has a team’s number and repeats an above-average or below-average performance. Harden struggled mightily against the Heat in last year’s playoff matchup. He only exceeded 20 points scored in one of six games that series.
