Matchup Preview
Both teams will have plenty of incentive to win when the Knicks and Timberwolves face off at Madison Square Garden on Monday night.
New York would love to overcome the Cleveland Cavaliers’ 2 1/2-game lead for the 4-seed and home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Minnesota, meanwhile, is wrestling with about eight other Western Conference teams to qualify for the play-in.
Only the Knicks will have the majority of their best players, however. Anthony Edwards is among six Timberwolves rotational players listed questionable. If Edwards’ ankle injury on Friday night is as bad as it looked, he will be limited at best.
Brunson will be available for the second straight game after missing the better part of the team’s previous seven. He put up a respectable 24 points in 32 minutes on Saturday against the reeling Nuggets. More important to Brunson was the Knicks’ third straight victory after dropping three in a row during his absence.
Brunson’s points prop sits a bit lower than his average over his last four. During that span, Brunson put up 27 a night, which includes the game in which he left early after putting up 19 points in the first 19 minutes.
He’s playing even better at the Garden since the start of February. In nine such games, he’s dropping 31 per game with shooting splits of 54% from the field and 49% from deep.
Brunson may find assists might a little harder to come by against a Timberwolves defense that ranks second in limiting them over its last 10 games. Going over the number above is a tough sell when you consider New York averages the fewest assists per game on the season, depending heavily on the one-on-one skills of players like Brunson, Julius Randle, and Immanuel Quickley.
