Illinois Sports Betting Boom

The jolt in action for September places Illinois third for the largest handle of the month. Only New York ($1.76 billion) and New Jersey ($1.29 billion) saw more reported action. Illinois has consistently ranked among the largest betting markets in the country.

According to the report, sports betting revenue also saw a major increase. Sportsbooks saw $86.2 million in adjusted gross revenue for September. This is a 10% increase year over year and granted $12.9 million in taxes to state coffers. Year to date, Illinois has seen approximately $103 million in tax revenue from sports betting.

DraftKings Sets Personal Best In Illinois

DraftKings was the dominant sportsbook in Illinois, reaching $402.9 million in handle for September. This is the highest single-month handle for DK in Illinois. DraftKings also saw record-setting revenue numbers, with $30.5 million off of a 7.7% hold. This is the first time DraftKings reached $30 million in revenue in Illinois.

FanDuel also saw a strong month in Illinois. The popular sportsbook saw $348.6 million in handle and reported the highest revenue in the state with $32.4 million. FanDuel saw a 9.3% hold rate for September.

Rounding up the top three was BetRivers, with $83 million in betting handle and $6.9 million in revenue for September in Illinois.

Illinois Growth Expected To Continue

The strong numbers from this year’s NFL and College Football betting seasons have reflected an overall growth in betting activity. This growth is only expected to continue for the remainder of the year, marking the largest sports betting year in the Prairie State.

So far this year, Illinois sportsbooks have seen $7.6 billion in total wagering handle. This marks a 16.6% increase compared to this time in 2022. Sports betting activity has continued to bloom in Illinois and is showing no signs of slowing down.
