Illinois ranked as the No. 2 sports betting state in the nation in August 2022. The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) reported a strong showing of $564,837,409.43 combined wagered in August. The Illinois sportsbook revenue report shows a 9.4% increase in betting compared to July’s numbers.

This uptick in betting could be attributed to locals preparing for NFL betting.

Big August For Online Illinois Sports Betting

The sports betting market in Illinois was understandably dominated by online sportsbooks in August. The report showed that of the more than half a billion dollars total, $540,038,147.20 came from online wagers. This is 95.6% of the entire market for August.

The Illinois sportsbook revenue report also showed that professional sports wagers dominated in that time frame. This accounted for $556,885,238.15 of all bets. With college sports being in the off-season, it is unsurprising that the balance turned out this way.

Illinois only trailed New York in August for total bet in a month. The Prairie State has been third in the US for multiple consecutive months. Being home to eight professional teams and several more collegiate organizations, Illinois is a prime location for sports betting activity.

Will Illinois Reign Continue?

New Jersey’s September numbers are already in. The reports show $866,719,412 wagered for the month. Illinois sportsbooks would have to top these numbers in order to remain the No. 2 market in the country. New York still leads the country in monthly sports betting handle (total dollars wagered).

For the bulk of the year, Illinois has trailed NJ in terms of betting handle. From May to July, Illinois sportsbooks topped $1.9 billion in wagers. This was $22 million shy of New Jersey’s total betting handle. Both markets have been close in activity ahead of the NFL season, but with the increase in bets coming for football, both markets will be tested.

We will have to wait and see if Illinois manages to continue to dominate over NJ going forward.
