Texans Looking To Build On Surprising 2023 Season

Expected to be one of the worst teams in the NFL following a campaign that earned them the No. 2 overall pick, the Texans instead came to life in a hurry thanks to the exciting combo of Stroud and rookie Head Coach DeMeco Ryans.

Do they have another leap to Super Bowl contention in them?

Stroud was one of the most aggressive QBs, leading the NFL in air yards per attempt. Add in the fact he was a rookie, and it’s quite impressive he ranked 12th in EPA+CPOE composite.

Stroud’s bolstered receiving corps looks like one of the best in the NFL. Breakout stars Nico Collins and Tank Dell (assuming he returns healthy) will be joined by former Bills superstar Stefon Diggs. Question marks surround Diggs after he tailed off to an extreme degree last season down the stretch.

His track record speaks for itself, but was last year a sign he has hit a wall? He’s only entering his age-31 season, but he certainly has plenty of miles on the tires.

The offensive line looks like the potential weak point on that side of the ball. The Ravens overwhelmed them in the playoffs. Houston will hope a year of continuity does this unit good, as they opted to use offseason resources mostly elsewhere.

On defense, the front seven looks strong, led by young pass rusher Will Anderson. He starred last year.

However, the secondary got exposed at times. As with the offensive line, the Texans are banking heavily on internal development. CB Derek Stingley Jr. and S Jalen Pitre enter their third seasons. The team did use a premium draft choice on Georgia CB Kamari Lassiter.

Schedule May Work Against Texans

Whereas last season, Houston played a last-place schedule in a widely panned division, things look like they’ll get tougher on that front in 2024.

After winning the AFC South, Houston will now play a first-place schedule. This year’s gauntlet includes the Bills, Chiefs, Ravens, and Cowboys.

Furthermore, the AFC South is no longer the laughingstock it once was. Indianapolis looks to have a winning head coach in place with Shane Steichen, though questions remain at quarterback after Anthony Richardson’s injury-marred debut. Jacksonville and Tennesee made win-now moves in the offseason.

NFL schedule strengths via opposing win totals have the Texans facing the fifth-most difficult slate of opponents. Houston has the talent to make it work, but things won’t come as easily as they did last season.
