Despite closing at 18-1 odds (5.3% implied probability), Mystik Dan won in epic fashion in the 150th Run for the Roses. The Ken McPeek-trained colt beat Sierra Leone and Forever Young in a three-way photo finish. Now, it’s onto handicapping Preakness Stakes odds. Step one: figuring out who the Preakness horses are after the Derby. The second leg of the American Triple Crown is set for Saturday, May 18.

2024 Preakness Horses Tracker

Is Mystik Dan One Of The Preakness Horses?

On Saturday morning, Mystik Dan was entered into the Preakness Stakes. Trainer Kenny McPeek said he needed to confirm that the three-year-old colt didn’t suffer another lung infection, which followed his presiding maiden win. Read more about the decision here.

Will A ‘New Shooter’ Be Favored?

A new shooter in the Preakness is given to horses that did not run in the Kentucky Derby.

In Preakness Futures Pool No. 2, Muth closed as the 7-2 favorite. For context, Muth was ineligible to participate in the Kentucky Derby because renowned trainer Bob Baffert is still suspended from Churchill Downs through the end of 2024.

This decision was based on 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit failing a drug test for Betamethasone, a prohibited steroid.

Earlier this week, Muth was all but confirmed for the Preakness. He won the Arkansas Derby on March 30, in which Mystik Dan finished third, taken down by 6 1/4 lengths. Imagination, another of Baffert’s horses who finished second in the Santa Derby, will likely land behind Muth on the odds board.

Here is what else we know about various horses for the $2 million Grade 1 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. This post will be updated with new developments.

What About Fierceness?

The Derby post-time favorite appears unlikely to run in the Preakness after trainer Todd Pletcher said the horse will ship back to Saratoga, the site of the 2024 Belmont Stakes, while the race’s home track undergoes renovations. The Belmont this year will also only be 1 1/4 miles instead of the traditional 1 1/2 miles.
