Open horse racing tracks in the US today

Gulfstream Park (Thursday – Sunday)

Gulfstream Park is located in Hallandale Beach Florida, 17 miles North of Miami. Live Thoroughbred racing takes place at Gulfstream Park from Thursday through Sunday during the Spring-Summer meet which runs April through September. Premium stakes days are on four Saturdays – Aug. 1 and 29, and Sept. 5 and 26. The race schedule consists of 10-12 races that include Claiming, Maiden, Allowance Optional Claiming and Stakes races with purses mostly less than $40,000. The majority of field sizes are 8-12 horses and first post time is 12:45 p.m. ET.

The Championship Meet starts in late November and runs through March with racing Wednesday through Sunday. Nearly 40 graded stakes make the Championship Meet one of the best in the country headlined by the Pegasus World Cup at the end of January and the Florida Derby on the final weekend of March. Track announcer Pete Aiello is one of the best in racing.

Gulfstream Park, led by the powerful Stronach Group, took a stand to continue horse racing during the COVID-19 health crisis despite an executive order from Broward County to close all non-essential businesses. The racing facility is closed to spectators during COVID-19 until further notice. However, there is a free live stream at the Gulfstream Park website and TVG.

Tampa Bay Downs (Wednesday, Friday & Saturday)

Tampa Bay Downs is located in Tampa, Florida. Live Thoroughbred racing takes place during the traditional season from late November through the first weekend in May and the Kentucky Derby. There are up to 25 stakes races with purses of $100,000 or more. However, racing continues through June and restarts July 1 with a lighter schedule and smaller Claiming, Maiden and Allowance races. During the traditional season, races run Wednesday through Sunday with post time at 12:25 p.m. ET.

The biggest race day is in March when more than $1 million in purses is offered and the winner of the $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) secures a spot into the Kentucky Derby. The 2020 winner was big longshot King Guillermo (49-1), who paid $100.40 on a $2 win bet. The horse’s owner is 5-time Major League Baseball All-Star Victor Martinez, whose stable is Victoria’s Ranch. The other noteworthy race that is a prep race for the Tampa Bay Derby and Kentucky Derby is the Sam F. Davis (G3) in early February, which is named in honor of the former track president who also was a quarterback on the 1933 University of Florida football team.

Racing fields are often 7-10 horses at Tampa Bay Downs with some even larger fields on Saturdays. However, the racing facility is closed to spectators during COVID-19 health crisis. Fans can watch free live streaming of horse racing on the Tampa Bay Downs website and TVG. A history of Tampa Bay Downs can be reviewed here, and the late New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was an ownership partner of the track in the 1980’s. Jockey Julie Krone won her first race at Tampa Bay Downs in 1981 at the age of 17, and became the first woman inducted into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

Santa Anita Park (Friday – Sunday)

Santa Anita Park, knows as The Great Race Place, is recognized as of the country’s premier racetracks. It is located 18 miles NE of Los Angeles, in Arcadia, CA with the beautiful and majestic backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. The track offers year-round racing thanks to favorable weather and continued support. Santa Anita Park has lush, manicured green lawns, colorful gardens and historically significant architecture.

Following the shutdown March 22, 2020 due to COVID-19 health crisis, Santa Anita resumed its Winter/Spring meet ‘spectator free’ May 15. The meet will continue through June 20.  Fewer than 100 essential personnel (plus 55 trainers and 21 jockeys) are allowed at the racing portion of the 320-acre property.

The Santa Anita Derby, normally run in early April as a major prep race for the Kentucky Derby, will run June 6, 2020 for the rescheduled Kentucky Derby Sept. 5.

Santa Anita History

The original racetrack opened in 1907 but closed in 1909 and burned in 1912. It reopened as Santa Anita Park on Christmas Day in 1934 during the Great Depression, becoming the first racetrack in California.

The Santa Anita Handicap was run for the first time in 1934 and became the richest race in the country with a purse of $100,000. Seabiscuit won the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap in his final race following a layoff from injury; his 33rd win in 89 career starts. Hollywood made a film at the track, ‘The Story of Seabiscuit’ in the late 1940’s, and released the movie ‘Seabiscuit’ in 2003. Santa Anita Park added a bronze statue of the racehorse in the walking ring in 1941. Racing was suspended at Santa Anita due to the Second World War. During WWII, the park was used as a Japanese American internment center with more than 17,000 people living in the stables.

Over the decades, Santa Anita has prospered with record attendance and is a leading, premier track that hosts some of the biggest races in the country.

Facts at the Track

Santa Anita Park is operated by the Stronach Group. Santa Anita houses three tracks – a mile long dirt track, a 9/10 of a mile long turf course and a 6 ½ furlongs long hillside turf course, which since 2019 only runs races at 5-6 furlongs.

Santa Anita has hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Championship races a record 10 times including the most recent 2019 event.

Golden Gate Fields (Thursday – Sunday)

Golden Gate Fields racetrack straddles both Albany and Berkeley and runs along the shoreline of the San Francisco Bay. Since 1941, Golden Gate is ‘Where the Bay Comes to Play.’ Live Thoroughbred racing resumes May 14 and the winter-spring meet runs through June 14 with racing held Thursday – Sunday plus Memorial Day on Monday, May 25. The final race day program on June 14 is highlighted by the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile, a $250,000 turf race rescheduled from its original date on April 25.

Golden Gate Fields has not held racing since March 29, having been ordered shut by the Alameda County Public Health Officer on April 2. When racing resumes without fans at the track, jockeys will wear masks as part of the strict protocols during the COVID-19 health crisis.

Golden Gate Fields has a Tapeta All Weather synthetic main track that was installed in 2007. The turf course will also be used during the winter-spring meet for the first time since late September during the fall meet.

The race schedule consists of 9-12 races that include Claiming, Maiden, Allowance and select Stakes races with purses mostly less than $20,000. Since 2011, Golden Gate has been owned and run by the Stronach Group, and TVG carries some of the live racing.

Churchill Downs (Thursday – Sunday)

Iconic Churchill Downs opened in 1875 and is located in Louisville, Kentucky; home to America’s greatest horse race, the Kentucky Derby. Live Thoroughbred racing takes place during three racing meets throughout the year. The 2020 Spring Meet was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the track opened for racing May 16 and continues through June 27.

Racing takes place Thursday through Sunday plus Memorial Day May 25. There are at least 10 races daily with Claiming, Maiden, Allowance and Stakes races including Road to the Kentucky Derby qualifying races. There are more than 30 graded stakes races throughout the year and the May 23 Matt Winn Stakes (G3) was added to the revised 2020 Derby prep schedule.

Following the Spring Meet, racing continues Sept. 1 – 27 and includes the rescheduled Kentucky Derby Sept. 5. A Kentucky Derby Betting Guide is updated at TheLines and provides information you can bet on leading up to the Run for the Roses. The Fall Meet is Oct. 25 – Nov. 29.

Charles Town Racing (Thursday – Saturday)

Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is a racetrack and casino just outside the eastern city limits of Charles Town, West Virginia. The track was opened in 1933, and since 1997 it has been operated by Penn National Gaming.

Charles Town will run eight races per night on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from May 14-May 30. Post time each night is 7:00 ET. Along with a standard wagering menu, Charles Town offers “rolling” doubles and Pick 3’s on every race, as well as two Pick 4s per night.

Charles Town has no grass track, and the dirt course is only three-quarters of a mile around. Thus, 6 ½-furlong and 7-furlong races are run around two turns rather than one-turn races. Charles Town’s 1 1/16-mile and 1 ⅛-mile races are conducted around three turns. A number of 4 ½ furlong sprint races are also on the nightly card.

Charles Town will race “spectator free” with strict protocols in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Charles Town is permitting only horses stabled in West Virginia or West Virginia-breds on the grounds. The receiving barn is closed. Thus, trainers who are not allocated stalls at the track must make arrangements to ship into the stalls of a trainer on the grounds.

During the current meet, only locally based jockeys can be named to ride. Jockey’s must have had at least 50 percent of their mounts in 2020 at Charles Town. Any riders coming from another state will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

Prior to racing being shutdown March 21, the track was showing early speed bias. Of the 80 races run during March, 70 were sprint races less than 1 mile. There were 29 races won by a horse who led from gate to wire. An additional 21 races were won by horses within 2-lengths of the lead at the quarter pole. So 62% of the races in March were won by front runners or pace pressers.

Lone Star Park (Monday – Wednesday, June 1-3)

Lone Star Park is located in Grand Prairie, TX 14 miles West of Dallas. Live Thoroughbred racing was scheduled from April 16 through July 19, 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic altered the spring and summer meet plans. Lone Star has ‘spectator free’ racing scheduled for the weekend of May 22-24 and Mon-Wed, June 1-3 with post time 3:05 local Central Time.

Texas is one of a select number of states in which online betting for horse racing is prohibited by state law. However, fans can watch the races from Lone Star Park on @TVG and @NBCSN, and follow horse racing and track updates on Twitter: @lonestarpark.
