Gotham Stakes Entries, Past Performances

1. Runninsonofagun (30-1)

Captured last two races, moving up slightly from claiming into a starter’s handicap. Was six lengths back entering the turn for the last race and powered up near the wire to prevail at 7-5. Gotham is a step up in class and distance. Looks like too much.

2. Glider (8-1)

Ran a strong second to Emmanuel in Allowance Optional Claiming company at Tampa Bay. Chased a dawdling pace and still took a run at the hot 1-5 favorite. Was a clear second. Connections hope Glider has a pace to run at here, where closers often do well. Three good distance efforts to start career.

3. Golden Code (12-1)

Takes another step up after an impressive seven-length victory in his second race. Broke alertly from the gate, held a small lead and put the field away in the stretch, winning my double-digit lengths. Now tries stakes company. Time at 7 furlongs was four seconds slower than that turned in by Morello, who is in this race. That’s significant.

4. Fromanothamutha (6-1)

Solid in Maiden Special Weights company, but flopped in the $250,000 Remsen. Led the field through a dream fraction of 51.47 for half a mile, but spit the bit at three quarters. Off of that race, this would be asking too much. Previously, came in second to Mo Donegal at 1 1/16 miles, beating Life is Great. Gets leading rider Dylan Davis. Mixed signals.

5.  Dean’s List (15-1)

Graduated with honors from Maiden Special Weights and then Allowance Optional Claiming company at Gulfstream Park. Last race was a thriller. At 1-5, he had to outlast Dean Delivers in a terrific stretch duel. Gulfstream’s top jockey Luis Saez made the difference in nudging him home. Does an all-out win at that level mean he’s over his head at a stakes, or does being trained by Todd Pletcher indicate further expectations? Moves to a new track and stretches out.

6. Life Is Great (15-1)

Strong effort in the Jimmy Winkfield, but was collared around the turn by Morello and beaten convincingly enough in the seven-furlong, $100,000 race. Figures to give another game effort, but Morello is in this field too. Could fill out a trifecta box.

7. Noneedtoworry (30-1)

Followed a familiar pattern of horses who perform well at Parx Racing, but struggle in the New York circuit. Wasn’t a bad effort in the Withers, as he ran a distant and evenly fifth to Early Voting. The second-place finisher in that race, Un Ojo, pulled off a 75-1 shocker in the Rebel Stakes last weekend. May run better than his odds would suggest, possible flirtation with the bottom of the super.

8. Bold Journey (9-2)

Inexplicably squandered a five-length lead in the stretch of the $100,000 Gander. May have been the contentious pace or the stretch to a mile, but he was leg weary in the stretch and gave up the kind of lead few do. Fortunately, this remains a one-turn race. More works and seasoning may help in his fourth outing.

9. Morello (3-1)

Highly-regarded and was played in the Jimmy Winkfield, going off as the 7-5 favorite. Made a nice move around the turn and looked strong winning at seven furlongs. Only drawback: that was a five-horse field, and this is 10. More variables. Based on the way he looked that day, going another furlong should not be too difficult. Has two races over the track, which is an advantage. Sharp contender.

10. Rockefeller (4-1)

Merits betting attention off of a second-place finish to Newgrange in the Grade III Sham. Stayed in it until the final 1/16 of a mile, then had nothing left. Only one turn this time. That race was on New Year’s Day. On his best, he’s right there. Gets second leading rider Trevor McCarthy.

Triple Crown Schedule

Gotham Stakes History

Think Unconventional. Stalkers and even deep closers have done well in the Gotham in recent years. Haikal came from dead last and, seemingly, out of state, making up double digits to capture the 2019 race. Weyburn won a gutsy stretch battle and triumphed at 46-1 last year, besting 4-5 shot Highly Motivated.

The race, and perhaps the surface, sets up for Morello. Because the extra furlong does not mean an extra turn, I think he can extend here.

Betting Strategies For 2022 Gotham Stakes Odds

Will take a shot that Morello likes the home track and gets the best of Rockefeller. A $10 win bet on Morello, a $5 exacta box with Rockefeller and Morello will be played. Will cover with a 9-6 box in case Rockefeller flops and a 6-9-10 trifecta box on the idea that Life Is Great is a good choice under Morello.

Glider, Dean’s List, Fromanothamutha, Bold Journey and Life is Great all make sensed to get a piece of the minors. Even Noneedtoworry isn’t horrible, if you are considering third or fourth place.

Tough to sort out the horses underneath. You need bounce backs from the 4 and 6, a stretch out from the 5. And if it comes in 9-10-5, the triple won’t pay well.

It’s hard to find separation with the horses underneath. So, I’ll focus more on top with the 9 and 10.

Good luck sorting out 2022 Gotham Stakes odds.
