Even after Kentucky’s upset win over Duke on Nov. 12, I was not sold on its long-term upside. Mark Pope’s new-look bunch relies heavily on perimeter shooting, especially in transition. Led by 3-point marksman Koby Brea, the Wildcats couldn’t miss throughout the opening month. They’ve also benefited from their opponents shooting just 27.3% on open looks from behind the arc.
In Kentucky’s first road test on Tuesday, Pope’s uptempo offense was bottled up in the half-court by Clemson’s experienced personnel, resulting in its first loss. The Wildcats’ perimeter defense didn’t regress much, but the Zags should deliver a blow.
Paced by Ryan Nembhard, who averages the fourth-highest assist rate nationally, Gonzaga utilizes a four-out, one-in attack that will give Kentucky fits. Expect them to play inside out through 6-foot-9 Graham Ike, as the Wildcats’ post-up defense has been suspect despite their imposing length.
If Kentucky is forced to trap Ike, one of the most effective low-post scorers nationally, Mark Few’s floor-spacers will reap the benefits.
Following Gonzaga’s unforeseen defeat versus unranked West Virginia in the Battle 4 Atlantis, in which Nembhard constantly missed quality shots, look for the Bulldogs to make a statement on their semi-home court.

My raw numbers have the Zags favored by a smidge under -5.5, meaning the Bulldogs have value on the current spread of -4.5. If Few’s unit can keep the Wildcats out of transition, their lack of a reliable point guard will continue to hold them back.
