According to ESPN’s Mark Schlabach, Woods pleaded no contest to reduced charges of reckless driving and refusal to submit to a lawful test in Martin County Circuit Court.

Woods was arrested March 27 after the vehicle he was driving struck a trailer attached to a truck and rolled onto its side. Woods initially pleaded not guilty. According to an affidavit, Woods said he had been looking at his cellphone before the crash. Additionally, he was cited for careless driving.

Later in the spring, Woods announced he would be stepping away from golf for “a period of time” to seek treatment and focus on his health.

According to ESPN, Martin County Judge Darren Steele said the license suspension is “for the safety of the people.” Steele warned Woods that if he drives for any reason during the five-year suspension, he will go directly to jail.

What It Means For Tiger Woods’ Golf Future

The court decision adds even more uncertainty to Woods’ future in competitive golf. The 50-year-old has already dealt with significant health and injury issues in recent years. It's unclear when—or whether—he will return to the sport.

Woods remains one of the most accomplished golfers ever. He owns 82 official PGA Tour victories, 15 major championships, and five Masters titles. He has also made the cut in 339 of 378 career PGA Tour starts.
