Colonial CC History

This is the 76th consecutive season that the TOUR has gone to Colonial, which is more times than any other course in the country outside of The Masters at Augusta National.

Similar to Southern Hills where the PGA Championship was played last week, Colonial is another Perry Maxwell design. This one features tree-lined fairways and very small greens. The course layout heavily favors elite ball strikers with great iron play, and typically driving accuracy has been far more correlated to success at Colonial as opposed to distance off the tee.

In recent years, around-the-green play has not been as significant.

Key Stats to Consider at Colonial

In recent years, the biggest indicator for success at Colonial has been accuracy, both off the tee and on approach. The Perry Maxwell design favors precision over all else. It’s not surprising that recent winners at Colonial have been superb ball strikers.

The layout at Colonial discourages long hitters from pulling driver and encourages crisp iron play. One player that stands out to both TheLines golf writer John Haslbauer and me this week is Viktor Hovland.

Why Viktor Hovland Appears To Fit This Week

Look no further than one of the best ball strikers and overall golfers on the PGA TOUR. Vik ranks second on TOUR in Strokes Gained: Approach over his last 36 rounds, which trails only Will Zalatoris who just finished second at the PGA Championship.

Hovland is also a tremendous driver of the golf ball, relying heavily on his accuracy off-the-tee far more so than distance. Over the course of the 2022 season, he has gained 19+ strokes off the tee, which ranks seventh on TOUR.

Although many don’t think of Hovland as a particularly good putter, he ranks in the top 50 with the flat stick this season, having gained 8.3 strokes on the greens, which is a substantial improvement compared to each of his last two seasons.

Arguably the biggest case to be made for Hovland this week at Colonial is the fact that recent winners have not needed to perform well around the greens because the areas surrounding the greens are not very difficult. In fact, 17 of the top 30 golfers in last year’s field, including the eventual winner Jason Kokrak, lost strokes around the green.

As many know, Hovland’s game is exceptional by every single Strokes Gained metric except ARG, where he has lost nearly 25 strokes this season. Considering the biggest flaw in Hovland’s game should be minimized this week, there is some value on Viktor across betting markets.
