Daniel Berger

There’s shaking off the rust, and then there’s whatever you want to call Daniel Berger’s journey since stepping away from the game in the summer of 2022. Berger underwent rehabilitation from June 2022 through the entire 2023 season to restore his lingering back issues.

Easing back into PGA Tour competition in 2024, Berger finally hit his vintage stride in the Fall Swing, with a pair of top-10 finishes at the Sanderson Farms Championship and RSM Classic. His recent start at the latter produced a runner-up finish, just one stroke shy of Maverick McNealy.

The four-time PGA Tour winner and former Ryder Cupper is a top-20 talent in the world at full strength, and he continues to show more encouraging signs as the post-hiatus reps pile on. Berger’s strengths fall in his precise ball-striking and Bermuda putting, with his best career finishes coming on shorter, positional venues like Pebble Beach and Colonial CC. Berger posted a career-best T7 finish at the Sony Open in his last appearance here in 2021 and is still priced at a discount for as long as the questions surrounding his health persist.

Cam Davis

One of the trendier value plays this week, Cam Davis, won’t afford you much leverage from a DFS standpoint but is still a value I can’t ignore from a betting perspective. Those who watched The Sentry closely understand Davis’ T13 finish was far more impressive than the final scorecard would otherwise suggest.

Davis put himself in an early hole with a sluggish +4 start through his first four holes in the opening round at The Sentry. He rebounded nicely, however, shooting -22 over his next three rounds. That’s exactly the trajectory I like to target when looking for bounce-back sleepers, as Davis appears to have kicked off the holiday rust now as he enters the second leg of the Aloha Swing.

Despite his impressive length off the tee, Davis’ discipline on positional venues has surprisingly led to his best results coming on shorter venues. He’s finished in the top 30 in his last five trips to the Sony Open, highlighted by a T7 in 2020. Ranking in the top 15 in Comp Course History and SG: Short Game, Waialae CC presents an excellent fit for Davis’ game.

Matt Kuchar

Whether it be a reward for disciplined course strategists who’ve successfully cracked the code of how to navigate this course or simply the comforting feeling that comes with starting your PGA Tour season in Hawaii each year, Waialae CC ranks as one the top stickiest course history tracks on tour. Naturally, on a course that has shown such a repeatable formula from its course horses, I’m drawn to Matt Kuchar, who ranks No. 1 in total strokes gained at Waialae CC. Kuchar’s resume at the Sony Open includes a win and eight top-15 finishes since 2011.

I’m less concerned about recent form when it comes to outlier course horses like Kuchar in this case, as he’s proven he can flip a switch and sleepwalk his way to contention here. The fit makes sense, too, as Kuchar ranks in the top 10 in driving accuracy and SG: Short Game on Bermuda greens.

Kuchar has also developed an affinity for short resort courses, with his last two PGA Tour wins coming in Mayakoba and here in 2019. And despite this being a pure course history play, Kuchar showed he still has plenty left in the tank with a pair of top-15 finishes over the Fall Swing.

Lucas Glover

I would not have thought twice if I saw Glover’s betting odds open at 50-1, and yet, consensus odds have placed him at nearly double that mark, making him my favorite value on the board this week. It’s no secret Glover loves a positional Bermuda course, as he picked up his latest two victories in 2022 at comp courses in Sedgefield CC and TPC Southwind.

The Georgia native has notoriously struggled with the putter but has flashed upside on these more familiar Bermuda greens.

At the Sony Open, Glover has shown tremendous upside, finishing T5 here in 2022. Fresh off a hot Fall Swing that featured top-3 finishes at both the Sanderson Farms Championship and Black Desert Championship, you won’t find a player with a better combination of recent form and course fit in this price range than Lucas Glover.
