The PGA TOUR hits the road for the Motor City with no signs of scoring slowing down. Detroit Golf Club is next up to host the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic, an event that is sure to produce some of the lowest scores of the season. Birdie fests and longshots always go hand-in-hand, as even the golf DFS picks with the longest golf odds at sportsbooks are capable of catching a hot putter for four rounds.

The Detroit Golf Club scorecard and course specs show it’s attackable for both bombers and plodders alike, and without an imposing favorite headlining the field, it truly feels open for the taking. With a formula of plus-distance, elite wedge play, spike putting upside, and performance on comp, easy scoring conditions, there are plenty of viable longshot options to consider for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Ahead, we’ll look to dig for some diamonds in the rough in this article ahead of the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

To identify “value” any given week on the PGA TOUR, I find it’s best first to understand the consensus key stat profile. Then, take a stance on the elements of the tournament that may go overlooked. At the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Recent Form, SG: APP, and Course History are consensus key areas factored into each player’s price.

From a golf DFS picks perspective, I will take a stance primarily on the importance of Birdies or Better Gained and Comp Course History to diversify my player pool. We’ve been in the teeth of some very difficult scoring venues over the last two months, so it may be fruitful to look further back to the Travelers Championship last week or the start of this year to reference players who are better suited for easier scoring venues as a buy-low opportunity coming out of the May and June grind.

Below, find my favorite value PGA golf Fantasy picks and longshots for the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic. Stats pulled across Last 36 Rounds unless otherwise noted.

Matt Wallace

One of the streakiest players on the PGA TOUR, Wallace tends to ride out his peaks for months at a time before sinking back into the valleys of missed cuts again. It was a similar pocket of trending form which led to his victory at Corales last season. This year, Wallace has found a groove with six consecutive made cuts and three top-20 finishes over that span. His best result this season came at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson where he finished T4.

TPC Craig Ranch, also new to the regular PGA TOUR rotation, has actually served as a very strong comp course to Detroit GC with its forgiveness off-the-tee, advantage to longer hitters, and easy scoring conditions. Overlapping course horses like Taylor Pendrith, Alex Noren, and Stephan Jaeger also suggest a sign of better things to come from Wallace this week. Wallace has a strong reputation for exploiting courses that are forgiving off-the-tee and will carry in some strong momentum after a T15 finish in Amsterdam last week.

Ben Griffin

A factor in several PGA TOUR events this season, even as the pre-tournament betting favorite at the Myrtle Beach Classic, it just seems like Ben Griffin’s first career victory is going to come in one of these soft-field birdie fests. Griffin proved his fit on northern Bent-Poa greens three starts ago at the RBC Canadian Open, falling just short of Robert MacIntryre to finish runner-up. That marked his fifth top-20 finish of the season.

From a stat profile standpoint, it’s not often you can find the No. 1 overall player in my model available at odds this long, but so is the case this week with Griffin in a field that lacks a dominant star. Griffin ranks top-10 in Weighted Putting, Birdies or Better Gained, and Prox: 75-150, all key skillset to score at Detroit Golf Club.

Thorbjorn Olesen

Bryson DeChambeau laid out the blueprint for bombers to over-power this century-old course back in his 2021 victory. The Hammer of Thor(bjorn) is well equipped to attack this course in the same manner. Olesen is top-40 in the field in terms of Driving Distance and has seen his best results this year come on more generous layouts.

That includes a victory on the DP World Tour at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship 10 starts ago, demonstrating a proven history of closing tournaments. He fits the mold of a bomber with spike putting upside I’m looking for to attack Detroit Golf Club, and enters in good form with just one missed cut over his last seven starts.

Chandler Phillips

If not for Jake Knapp and his victory in Mexico, it might be Chandler Phillips leading the Rookie of the Year race at this leg of the season. Phillips has impressively piled up five top-25 finishes in his debut season and has finished T12 and T10 in his latest two starts.

With Phillips, his ability to consistently gain on approach is what leaves me encouraged about his long-term place on TOUR. He ranks top-10 in terms of SG: APP over the last 36 rounds and also ranks top 30 in Birdies or Better Gained and Par-5 Scoring. He’s a bit of a longshot to win this week, but his hot form and elevated baseline on approach make for a very appealing fantasy sleeper pick or top-20 placement consideration.

GOLF DFS PLAYER POOL

With all the course-fit profiles in mind, I’m leaning early toward the below player pool for golf DFS picks this week. Naturally, I’m looking their way in the 2024 Rocket Mortgage Classic odds as well. I’ve broken the list down by projected pricing/odds tier for DraftKings.
