How Giannis Injury, Bucks Loss Shifted NBA Futures Yet Again

Giannis injury

Everything was coming up Bucks before Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals, until the Giannis injury.

Milwaukee had a 2-1 series lead and Trae Young was ruled out 90 minutes before tipoff. The Hawks were leading big at the half, but without their star point guard, even Atlanta would admit their 13-point halftime lead didn’t feel safe. Especially when the Bucks cut it to an eight-point deficit with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter.

Then it all went wrong. Giannis Antetokounmpo jumped up for a block attempt on a Clint Capela alley-oop and hyperextended his knee as he landed. With his exit to the locker room went not only the momentum of the game and the series, but also the Bucks’ odds as the favorites to win the NBA Championship on most sportsbooks.

Where Bucks Stood Before Giannis Injury

Before Giannis’s injury, the Bucks were -1500 to win the Eastern Conference, and -112 to win it all on both FanDuel and DraftKings. BetMGM was the first major legal sportsbook to re-open NBA Championshio odds after the injury late Tuesday night. BetMGM installed the Suns as new favorites at -115 and the Bucks behind them at +225, after previously having the Bucks as a -110 favorite.

That represented a shift in implied probability for Milwaukee from 52.4% down to 30.8% to win it all.

It’s important to note this comes after Antetokounmpo’s injury but before the official diagnosis on his knee. He’s expected to have an MRI on Wednesday.

Hawks Game 4 Upset Was Historic

The Hawks, meanwhile, deserve all the credit for their blowout win in Game 4. They had a 10-point lead at the time of Giannis’s injury and were controlling the game and the boards on both sides of the ball.

Those who laid some action on the Hawks’ moneyline pregame (+200 on DraftKings Sportsbook) saw their confidence skyrocket with Giannis’s exit.

Atlanta’s victory as a nine-point underdog was actually the second largest conference finals upset in the last 30 years, behind only the 2017 Celtics who defeated the Cavs as 16.5-point underdogs.

Trae Young is listed as day-to-day after a deep bone bruise in his foot kept him in street clothes for Game 4. His return combined with the likelihood that Giannis will miss at least some time would set the Hawks up nicely to take this series. They currently sit at +650 on BetMGM to win it all.

Look Ahead To Game 5
