GeoComply has been licensed as a geolocation and ID service provider for the upcoming Maryland sports betting market. The Maryland State Lottery and Gaming Control Agency granted the license. With this, the national leader in sports betting geolocation technology will help verify users are within the state’s borders to utilize sportsbooks in Maryland.
GeoComply will be used to ensure sportsbooks only operate in the approved jurisdictions of the Old Line State.
Maryland Meets GeoComply
The Maryland State Lottery licensing GeoComply as the state’s geolocation technology firm is not surprising. GeoComply is active in most US markets, Including Arizona, Louisiana, and neighboring Virginia.
“We are very excited about the launch of Maryland’s highly anticipated mobile sports betting market,” said Lindsay Slader, GeoComply’s SVP of Compliance. “Our team has worked hard to meet Maryland’s rigorous standards. Having our license in hand means that our customers can launch with confidence on day one. We look forward to supporting the compliance needs of operators and providing state regulators with tools and data so they can properly oversee the growth of mobile sports betting in Maryland.”
The company has experience in ensuring the safety of products and that laws are not being violated. GeoComply just recently prevented outside bets from being placed in Kansas when that market went live. A reported 16,000 Missouri residents attempted to wager at Kansas sportsbooks during the soft launch and were blocked by GeoComply.
The company is expected to do the same in Maryland, which shares the DMV with Virginia and Washington D.C. While Virginia hosts statewide mobile betting, Maryland sportsbooks will be completely blocked in D.C. as only GambetDC is allowed to offer odds regionwide. GeoComply will block any attempts within the D.C. border to wager.
Maryland Betting Underway
This deal marks another step towards an eventual launch in Maryland. The market will be live in either late November or early December. The Maryland State Lottery has already begun approving betting licenses and sportsbooks have begun promoting pre-live offers to residents.
Maryland residents will get their hands on online sportsbooks in a manner of weeks and GeoComply will ensure the launch runs smoothly. In addition to geolocation technology, the company also works to prevent underage betting and secure payments. The Maryland market is in good hands with GeoComply at the helm.
A previous version of this article said GeoComply would oversee sports betting in Maryland. It was inaccurate to say that any entity other than Maryland Lottery and Gaming will oversee sportsbooks in Maryland. GeoComply will operate geolocation services, but does not have oversight of Maryland’s sports wagering program. Also, no geolocation provider will be awarded the market as a whole.Editor’s Note
