PGA TOUR golf continues with Riviera CC next on tap to host the 2024 Genesis Invitational this Thursday. Tiger Woods is back in action, and Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland are the favorites among Genesis Invitational bets this week, as John Haslbauer provides his favorite PGA TOUR picks among all the golf odds offered this week. Below, you’ll find the best odds across betting sites for each player.

One of the most iconic venues in the United States prepares to host the most iconic golfer of all time alongside all the best players the PGA TOUR has to offer. With the NFL officially in its offseason, how could you not be excited for the 2024 Genesis Invitational to tee off this Thursday in Los Angeles?

Tiger Woods is set to make his 2024 debut, decked out in his new Sun Day Red apparel, and he’ll vie to make the cut in this 70-man Signature Event headlined by Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland.

Historically, this event has produced major-like leaderboards, rewarding players in great form leading in, and requiring well-rounded skillsets from tee to green to combat a course like Riviera CC, which can quickly accentuate any mistakes.

Let’s go through all the bets I’ve placed for the 2024 Genesis Invitational.

HOW I BUILT MY Genesis Invitational Betting Card

I understand longshots beyond 100-1 have won in each of the first six PGA TOUR events of 2024. But I firmly believe that streak will end this week in such a concentrated field of elite players, where each of the favorites has already demonstrated a strong, sticky course history. Elite ball-strikers can separate themselves from the pack at Riviera, and although a Signature Event, there a clear talent disparity after the top 10 or so names.

For my betting card, I looked to get outright exposure to as many of the elite names in this field as I could, featuring a tight card of just four outright bets, each inside the top 12 of my model.

With all of that in mind, it’s back to business as usual for my weekly stake at the Genesis Invitational:

  • Outrights – 3.5U in to pay 25U each
  • FRL – 0.5U in to pay out 10U+ each
  • Full Tournament Matchups – 1U in to pay out 2U
  • Props – 1.5U in to pay out 3U+ each

Collin Morikawa

My Bet: +2200
Best Available Odds:

One of many elite talents and proven winners with California ties in this field, it was tough to decipher whether to begin my card with Morikawa, Cantlay, Schauffele, or Homa. Ultimately, I let the odds decide and jumped on the value of Morikawa’s drifted odds, but his ball-striking form enters the Genesis Invitational with the least question marks for me.

Morikawa ranks top-10 in SG: APP, SG: OTT, Par-5 Scoring, Bogey Avoidance, and Course History leading in. That’s a stat profile you’d typically see from a favorite, so I’ll happy jump on the odds discount here. Morikawa was a winner five starts ago at the ZOZO Championship and has always been at his best putting on familiar Poa greens.

Ludvig Aberg

My Bet: +2400
Best Available Odds:

My featured spotlight player of the week, I’m buying the hype now before Aberg takes down his first prominent event, and the days of betting him beyond 20-1 are finally behind us. I will still contest there is no better course fit for Aberg on TOUR than Torrey Pines, which he was a couple of sloppy missed tap-ins away from winning in his debut. So, coming off back-to-back top-10s on the California Swing, I don’t see any reason why that form should stop now on a course like Riviera CC, which will continue to reward the best ball strikers and proven Poa putters.

Already battle-tested with wins at the Ryder Cup and on both the PGA TOUR and DP World Tour, I’m not concerned about this being Ludvig’s first “big” test in a loaded field.

Justin Thomas

My Bet: +2700
Best Available Odds:

I would not have thought twice if Justin Thomas opened at half this price as the third favorite on the board at Riviera CC. Understandably the price has been bet down since the start of the week, but I would still endorse Thomas at any number 20-1 or longer.

With a continued streak of seven consecutive top-12 finishes dating back to the Wyndham Championship, it’s safe to say the slump is officially behind him. Thomas is impressively gaining throughout his bag across all four major strokes gained categories over this run, and can be counted on to play his best in big moments, considering his last two wins came at the PGA Championship and THE PLAYERS Championship.

With three top-10s at this event since 2018, Thomas is trending closer and closer to having his good friend Tiger Woods hand him the trophy on Sunday.

Wyndham Clark

My Bet: +5500
Best Available Odds:

Going for the George Thomas Sweep, Clark has already shown an affinity for this style of golf course after claiming his first career major victory at Los Angeles Country Club last summer. With great long-term numbers on Poa greens, Clark once again paid off his fit for California courses two weeks ago with his 54-hole win at Pebble Beach. I expect that comfort on the greens to continue into Riviera.

Interestingly, Clark’s comeuppance continues to feel reminiscent of Max Homa’s, as both players held elite acclaim in their amateur career, underperformed on the PGA TOUR, and then burst onto the scene with wins at Quail Hollow, and in multiple wins on California Poa greens. So, if that narrative continues, Clark seems due for a Genesis Invitational win soon.

Cameron Young

My Bet: +4000
Best Available Odds:

It’s still hard to trust whether Young can sustain four consistent rounds on the PGA TOUR as he continues to chase his first win, but he’s proven on plenty of occasions that he’s capable of jumping off to a hot start by flexing his elite ball striking ability. Young burst onto the scene at this event in 2022, so I trust he knows how to navigate his way around this nuanced course set up.

Wyndham Clark

My Bet: +4500
Best Available Odds:

Joaquin Niemann was a wire-to-wire winner here in 2022, and I would not complain if Clark followed suit in the same way. Clark has all the skillsets you look for in an FRL prospect (great par-5 scorer with plus-distance and spike putting upside), and his number is still palatable despite this limited field.

Hideki Matsuyama

My Bet: +5500
Best Available Odds:

A value bet on a proven veteran ball-striker with great history at the Genesis Invitational, Matsuyama showed me enough with his T22 finish at the WM Phoenix Open last week to prove he’s still in his own vintage form.

Genesis Invitational Bets: PROPS (2.5 UNITS)

Full Tournament Matchup: Ludvig Aberg > Jordan Spieth

My Bet: -110

I’m very bullish on Aberg’s fit for Riviera and bearish on Spieth coming into the Genesis Invitational, which always makes for an ideal matchup bet target. I believe we’re getting a discount on Aberg’s lack of course history; however, Spieth’s leaves more concern than encouragement. He has just one finish inside the top 25 since 2018 and has predominantly struggled to figure out these Poa greens. Aberg has the upper hand by current form. So, I’m comfortable taking the risk here in his course debut.

Top-10 Finish: Ludvig Aberg

My Bet: +200
Best Available Odds:

As I mentioned, I’m very bullish on Aberg’s fit for this course, and do not have the same concerns as others surrounding his lack of experience in difficult scoring conditions or high pressure events. One of the best ball-striking talents on the PGA TOUR, I expect Aberg to complete the California swing with top-10s across the Farmers Insurance Open, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and Genesis Invitational.

Top Asian Player: Hideki Matsuyama

My Bet: +500
Best Available Odds:

I struggle to find a ton of value in the standard placement prop markets in limited field weeks, but this one novelty prop I do love. Matsuyama will square off against Tom Kim, Si Woo Kim, Byeong Hun An, Sungjae Im, and Kevin Yu in this market. Of that group, Matsuyama is unquestionably the best pedigree of player, has the best course history, and enters in very good form with two top 25s over his last three starts.

One And Done

My Pick: Collin Morikawa

It’s another Signature Event week, which, for OAD purposes, means this is one of the most crucial events of the year to get right. Notwithstanding the elevated purse, I believe Riviera CC is one of very few venues on the PGA TOUR schedule that properly separates the contenders from the pretenders. So, if there were ever a week to buck the trend of longshot winners in 2024, I firmly believe it’s this one.

Assessing the top of the board, I would not be surprised to see Scheffler and McIlroy command their highest ownership yet. This is a very “winnable” field for each, facing a field of just 70, and each enters in great form with a proven course history and a massive purse at stake. I can’t fault anyone for choosing McIlroy in OAD this week, but I’ve personally sided with Morikawa on his final California start of the season while in great form.

If not Morikawa, I would also consider playing Ludvig Abergin in OAD.

That’ll do it for this week’s PGA TOUR golf bets. Best of luck this week with your own Genesis Invitational bets, and see you next Sunday for Mexico Open at Vidanta preview. For more, follow TheLines on Twitter.
