But with losses to her two top rivals this clay court season, and a thigh injury that forced her to retire from a match earlier this month, is Iga Swiatek as big a favorite at the French Open as the odds say? French Open Odds: The Favorite
Iga Swiatek
Swiatek is 30-3 on clay in the last two years, and she won two out of the last three French Opens. She’s certainly shown herself the top player on clay by a wide margin, and her short odds reflect that.
The question is, should injury concerns scare us away from betting on the heavy favorite? I don’t really think so.
Swiatek said after a recent match that the injury “shouldn’t be anything serious.” And she’s already been seen practicing at Roland Garros instead of resting up. Also, she wins so many of her matches in dominant fashion that she’s likely to have a light workload in the first week of the tournament. That gives her more time to recover.
Perhaps a bigger worry for Swiatek bettors is the fact that Elena Rybakina landed in her half of the draw. I think Swiatek is still the safest bet on the board. But, I’d feel better about the play if she didn’t potentially have to get through Rybakina and Sabalenka to win the title.
French Open Odds: The Contenders
Aryna Sabalenka
Sabalenka had a relatively good clay court season, making the final at Stuttgart and winning Madrid. However, she did suffer a disappointing first-round exit in Rome at the hands of 134th-ranked American Sofia Kenin.
Winner of the 2023 Australian Open, the 6-foot-tall Sabalenka generates a ton of power and has improved her consistency as of late.
But, my fear with Sabalenka is that the market overweights her win over Swiatek in the Madrid finals, which might be slightly deceiving. The tournament in Madrid is played at a high altitude, making conditions significantly quicker than any of the main clay court events on tour. So the playing environment in Madrid favors to the heavy-hitting Sabalenka. And for that reason, I’m out.
Elena Rybakina
Rybakina is coming off a win earlier this month in Rome, beating Swiatek along the way. However, Swiatek had to quit the match due to injury, so it’s hard to know how much significance to give that result.
Either way, it’s impossible to ignore the year Rybakina has had overall. She made the finals at Miami and the Australian Open, and she beat Swiatek and Sabalenka back-to-back to win Indian Wells.
Like Sabalenka, Rybakina has enough firepower to blow anyone off the court. Maybe even scarier is her quiet confidence. She very rarely shows emotion, even after she won Wimbledon last year.
But, Rybakina has never surpassed the quarterfinals at Roland Garros. While I wouldn’t be surprised to see her play spoiler, especially given her success against Swiatek this year, I’m not sure the price is good enough to bet on her to go the distance.
French Open Odds: Longshot To Consider
Jelena Ostapenko
Though it’s fair to say this tournament will probably come down to a three-horse race between Swiatek, Sabalenka, and Rybakina, there might be some value to be had on Ostapenko.
The super-aggressive Latvian enters in good form, off a run to the semis in Rome. And her all-out attacking style can give anyone trouble when she’s on her game. Clay is her favorite surface, having won the French Open in 2017, and she’s playing with a ton of confidence right now.
Worth noting: Ostapenko is 3-0 against Swiatek in her career, so she may have a mental edge if she can make her way to the finals against the top seed.
