To identify “value” any given week on the PGA TOUR, I find it’s best first to understand the consensus key stat profile. Then, take a stance on the elements of the tournament that may go overlooked. At the FedEx St Jude Championship, Recent Form, Course History, and SG: Approach are consensus key areas factored into each player’s price. To exploit value, I’m looking to take a stance on the importance of approach proximity from 125-200 yards and long-term putting skill, particularly on firm & fast Bermuda greens, to differentiate my player pool.

Golf DFS Sleepers In $8000 Range

Here are my favorite golf DFS picks among lower-priced players for the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Stats are pulled from the last 36 rounds unless otherwise noted.

Play: Billy Horschel $8500

Contrary to his putting routine, Horschel really should not be sneaking up on anybody leading into this week. Even still, he’s drifted to a price that’s simply too good to ignore, as I have him pegged as a top-10 contender to win in Memphis this week.

Horschel has made a career out of peaking for the FedEx Cup playoffs. He was a winner of both the BMW Championship and TOUR Championship in 2014 and has racked up six top-10 finishes in FedEx Cup Playoff events over the last decade. His success at TPC Southwind precedes its time as a playoff host as well, as Horschel ranks top-5 in Course History here with five career top-10 finishes on these grounds.

Looking beyond the past history, Horschel is also trending at the right time, fresh off of back-to-back top-10 finishes at The Open and Wyndham Championship. Always a threat on Bermuda greens, Horschel seems to have his ball-striking form figured out now and looks destined for another top-10 finish this week.

We know Sam Burns to be a threat any time he sets foot on Bermuda greens, but a heightened level of consistency with his ball striking leaves room for a higher floor than years past at the FedEx St Jude Championship for the Louisiana native. Burns has had a good overall season in 2024 with nine top-15 finishes, and while he’s presumably done enough to land himself on the Presidents Cup roster next month, a win would go a long way in cementing his place amongst the top American golfers in the game right now.

Burns demonstrated his fit for TPC Southwind in 2022, ultimately falling to Abraham Ancer in a playoff alongside Hideki Matsuyama. I view Burns as a streaky yet volatile ball striker who is susceptible to blow-ups on courses that require precision, which isn’t ideal for the setup at TPC Southwind. However, he’s recently done well in overcoming that reputation, with wins at positional venues like Colonial CC and Innisbrook Resort. At the end of the day, Burns is enough of a threat putting on Bermuda greens that he can afford to play a bit more conservative off-the-tee. If he can avoid the hazards, the rest of his game is looking polished for another high finish in Memphis.

Golf DFS Sleepers In $7000 Range

The Memphis heat in August isn’t for everyone, so I find myself building a player pool around those with Southern ties who know how to withstand these sweltering conditions. The Georgia Bulldog is no stranger to this part of the country, excelling on comp courses like TPC Louisiana, The Dunes Golf & Beach Club, and CC of Jackson in similar Bermuda-based conditions.

Thompson is ascending at the right time, as a dominant win at the John Deere Classic has now put him on the bubble for a Presidents Cup captain’s pick. He has just one missed cut and five top-12 finishes over his last 10 starts, including a win and two runner-up showings. He’s been a model of consistency off-the-tee, a pre-requisite at TPC Southwind, while also playing above TOUR average in terms of Putting, Around-the-green, and Approach over this hot stretch. That’s a great recipe for another top-12 push as Thompson looks to continue the momentum from his T12 finish at last week’s Wyndham Championship.

TPC Southwind may not be the quintessential fit for a bomber like Taylor Pendrith, but I’ve actually been very impressed with his course management on less-than-driver courses. Over the last two seasons, Pendrith has posted top-15 finishes on comp courses like TPC Summerlin, TPC Sawgrass, TPC Louisiana, Pebble Beach GL, and Sea Island Resort.

If the FedEx Cup Playoffs are all about heating up at the right time, few others this far down the board can boast the form Pendrith is currently showing. In 10 starts since his win at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Pendrith has stacked up five top-15 finishes with just one missed cut. He enters the FedEx St Jude Championship on the heels of back-to-back top-5 finishes, a credit to his consistency with his irons and putting.
